Soundgarden/STP Pickups/Tone

Hi ,

I have an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro. Pickups suck and I want to change out the bridge first.

I'm using this guitar to cover songs by Soundgarden and STP.

Would a Duncan Custom do the job? Would I be able to coil split this? https://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/duncan-custom

I'm using a Marshall DSL40C with a creamback and tung sol preamps and stock power tubes.

Thanks in advance, any and all recommendations would be awesome.

Re: Soundgarden/STP Pickups/Tone

I've used a Custom, Demon, and S Deco V to cover STP stuff. The Custom would work well with your amp.

Re: Soundgarden/STP Pickups/Tone

Starting with Purple Dean Deleo used more and more Telecasters & P90 guitars; I think I remember Dean saying there was "not a humbucker" on some of their later albums. I think you can really hear that; for a long time when I was younger I really wanted to nail his tone, and it only really worked when I started using single coils more. I would look into a Phat Cat.

Save your money and buy a better guitar
Using a Carl Martin AC Tone pedal nails STP

Buy a better guitar? What's wrong with his Epi Pro? Probably better made than the average off-the-shelf Gibson! My favorite LP of all time was an Epi!

Typically, an electronics upgrade is all that's needed and, for many, not even that with the higher quality "Probucker" pickups Epi has been using in recent years!

I've used a Custom 5, Demon, and '59/Custom for STP. I think his guitar will be fine given the amp.

Welcome to the forum!

I'd pick the Custom for that, too..and yes, it can be coil split. Cool guitar as well.

They may well be, but i'm talking about Jap Tokai, best LP guitars available and i have 4 of them
Anything Chinese is ordinary at best

Re: Soundgarden/STP Pickups/Tone

For STP, you need two amp, a Vox and a Marshall. Any PAF-ish pickup will do.

Re: Soundgarden/STP Pickups/Tone

I for sure hear lots of low output PAF's, single coils, and P-90's across those two bands. Kim Thayil from Soundgarden usually used a Polara S-100 and those have almost antiquity or sethish PAF's. Chris Cornell used lots of Telecasters and Les Pauls, I think most were pretty stock. So probably a max of something like a 498T for harder Soundgarden riffage. All of this is "educated" guessing.

Thank to everyone for all your input.

FYI the Epiphone is my secondary guitar. My main guitar is a Fender American Standard Strat with a Shawbucker in the bridge.

Re: Soundgarden/STP Pickups/Tone

It's possible to split any humbucker with a 4-conductor cable; the Custom comes stock with such a cable.

Starting with Purple Dean Deleo used more and more Telecasters & P90 guitars; I think I remember Dean saying there was "not a humbucker" on some of their later albums.

I've seen an interview where Dean DeLeo claimed that Core was his '78 LP Standard doubled with a late 60s Telecaster. I don't know about Purple, while Tiny Music supposedly doesn't have any humbuckers on it. On No. 4 I'm pretty sure they are humbuckers on Down at the very least.

The Custom should absolutely be capable of doing STP tones, though I agree with the poster who recommended PAF-style pickups. Both Dean DeLeo and Kim Thayil seemed to favor lower output pickups and while the tone of the Custom will be somewhat similar the feel will be quite different.

Re: Soundgarden/STP Pickups/Tone

For me, a Gretsch with Filtertrons or DeArmond did Soundgarden the best and an ash Tele with a Broadcaster did STP the best (when I was recording). Covering them both live I just used my LP Standard with 498/490 into a Marshall. Close enough in a live room.

But if I had to pick a Duncan Humbucker to get me closer, I might try 59/Custom or a Pearly Gates and roll the tone off slightly. Custom would work too but I think it's a little on the hot side. Just need something bright enough with a little thump to it to get into single coil sounding territory.
