ok so I downloaded screaming lessons http://www.screaminglessons.com/

I am getting a bit more of a compressed sound and some distortion in my voice, it is coming along good, I wanna record some original stuff with youtube mixed like this soon, here is a Soundgarden song that I sang:

Hi. Stupid here. I think the thing I dig most about that effort, is the one intangible many or most lack IMO, and that is that you are comfortable in your own skin, and that really makes the performance. Not an easy accomplishment either. Congratulations.

Thanks brutha :beerchug:

cool, I dig :headbang:

Re: soundgarden...vocals

That was great. Your voice would go really well with a neo prog or prog metal band, I think.

I would like to join, my vocals need to be stronger though, I have only been singing regularly for three months and vocal cords/muscles are super small so I need to work up to that I think, and work on better technique
lol word up! I agreee, I hear pitchiness too, thats a good catch. Other stuff I will try is singing without the pop filter and stopping turning my head away to avoid the breathing in between words.

Re: soundgarden...vocals

Make a synth track which is essentially the notes of the vocals without the words and sing along to that. You will subconsciously lock into the pitch without needing to record hundreds of takes or resorting to Melodyne.

good call brutha! Ill try it. I used to have melodyne and just tune up my vocal track and auto tune it, then sing along with the aauto-tuned track and it was less pitchy. ultimately all singers just wanna avoid pitchiness, synth or tuned up vocals may be a good stepping stone and not a crutch, cheers :beerchug:

Re: soundgarden...vocals

Hell, I admire anyone that is using Chris Cornell as an example to sound like. You had a few times reaching that edgy breakup of vocals that is hard to achieve. Nice work.

I'll often keep takes that are a tiny bit pitchy if it sounds cool and has the right attitude. The human voice is arguably the most expressive part and to me it seems a bit senseless to want it as "gridded" as the instruments. I have nothing against melodyne for certain types of music but I personally don't use any pitch correction on my voice.

Thanks brutha, this is so great to hear, really inspiring! Ill keep it up, glad to know my hard work paid off, cheers :) its really fun for me practicing vocals, this makes it all the better

I agree with that! vocals make guitar seem so easy, cause you just press a finger and then boom there it is! no invisible weird stuff like when you hit higher notes with tougher vowels that causes strain or stops you from hitting the pitch. I am thinking of buying and using melodyne but have not yet. I am gonna get a new computer first, I have been saving up for that. no pitch correct? cool man, you are staying true; that way when you play a track you know exactly where you are and your brain processes it in that way instead of listening to the polished version. Do you do lots of takes and then splice them all together? Studio recordings are such cheating ways to do stuff, the proof is in the pudding, the live show!

No pitch correct whatsoever. I prefer to practice, get warmed up and in the right "zone" so to speak and do takes until it sounds right rather than splice too many performances together and live I can do what I do on the records. I'm not against using it for clients who really want that but I will try and talk them into just getting the performance right first. If you're straining and really belting out volume while hitting higher notes, you just need to learn the right way to use your palette. I recently went back to a vocal coach and even after almost 10 years of singing/screaming my voice is in good shape. I learned how to hit notes as high as I like while not having to push as hard and keeping the volume consistent with midrange and low notes. I highly recommend getting singing lessons even if you can sing because it helps you unlock your potential. It might sound a bit nasal at first while you get used to the technique, but years later when you're still singing properly you won't regret it.

Very cool! I really dig your stuff, you are a true frontman; it takes a lot to keep a 3-piece going in the right direction as singer/guitarist. You have certainly done it all, being on stage at big shows with heavy distorted vocals and so forth.

Ive only really been singing for 3 months, I used to sing a long time ago, but I could not figure out what I was doing wrong, and the vocal coaches were bad since they did not know about rock singing. Its hard to find a rock singer coach since most singers like to say they are self taught.

I dig your post, I am looking closer into skype lessons, I am thinking about trying this since its only $25 a week and I do like to record my singing and get professional skype feedback: http://www.rpmvocalstudio.com/skype/evaluations.html

I'd be happy to give you some pointers over skype. I remember the technical side of things well enough. I remember I was supposed to do vocals for some of your songs but I had to move house (moving house was twice as stressful :P), work on some assessments in production school and move house so it kind of got away from me. Sorry about that. I recently set my studio back up again so I'd be happy to do it unless you feel you're up to scratch, then more power to ya!

Cool brutha! I have used my friends skype setup but I need to download it and test it, I have a laptop with a built in camera and my videocamera might have capacity too, but I wanna make sure. Ill make sure the skype works and then PM you, that sounds great, thanks :)

Re: soundgarden...vocals

Yup...a little pitchy. I do like the 'attitude' but I feel like some of that is interfering with the pitch. Not drowning in delay though this time so that's nice!

Once again would like to see your progress as you go, and just take things slow to nail certain parts...the synth idea is a great one for training! Don't waste your money on melodyne, just keep putting time into your technique.

Re: soundgarden...vocals

thanks bro! I appreciate the objective constructive criticism. I have been singing for 3 months so I have faith my pitchiness will 'get corrected'. I need to put in another 1000 hours of training. I sing along with scales on a piano every day so it will get more gridded and less pitchy. I am focusing on getting this technique down, thanks so much for the listen and feedback! I am stoked you would like to see my progress, cheers :headbang:
