Sovtek 6L6WXT+ vs. EHX 6L6GC

The Drama Dude
I keep reading that these are virtually the same, and that they're both based on the RCA Blackplate 6L6.

Can someone tell me the pros/cons of each?

It's more than likely going to be one of these 6L6s when I change my tubes in the coming weeks.

Re: Sovtek 6L6WXT+ vs. EHX 6L6GC

The Sovtek 6L6WXT+ is exactley the same tube as the EH 6L6GC.
I know you will find confusing reports about it on the web, some claim the EH 6L6GC is an upgrade of a Sovtek 6L6WXT+, but that is inaccurate, since the two tubes are the same except the relabeled logo.

It is not a bad tube however, so I would look for the cheapest one out of the Sovtek and EH, and buy that one knowing it is the same as the other.
After the price of SED Winged =C= went up hugely once more, I'll probably go for the EH 6L6GC/Sovtek 6L6WXT+ as my output tubes in the future as well.

I've been looking at trying those but my Budda is real easy on tubes. I had some Sovtek 6550's in it that lasted 2 years with lots of gigs. Those sounded pretty good and I wouldn't mind trying their other offerings.

Are you positive of this? Im looking at one of each here side by side and they are similar in construction but the internals dont look exactly the same. I can see a family resemblance but not the same thing. But am i seeing different tubes or just different production runs? Or is this a case of where when the EH tube was brought out it was a relabeled Sovtek then the sovtek design was updated or some such so there are identical tubes from old stocks floating around with different labels.

Edgecrusher:
After doing a lot of internet research on the differences between the current made Sovtek 6L6WXT+ and the EH 6L6GC, I wrote my tube supplier (a guy that has a lot of know how on glass, Dirk from TubeTown.net in Germany) and took the question to him after I noticed he did not sell the EH 6L6GC any more. He assured me the tubes were identical and that he did several tests (measuring, internal examination, tonal comparisson) to compare the Sovtek 6L6WXT+ and the EH 6L6GC and was totaly unable to find any differences at all between the two tubes except for the different label. Since the Sovtek 6L6WXT+ was the cheapest to buy (for him that is, don't know if it is always the case) for him, he stocked those and dropped the EH 6L6GC because he thinks it's crazy to pay more for the same tube with a different logo.
Another of my tube suppliers (Tonefactory.nl) gave me the same explanation after asking about the difference, he still does sell both the Sovtek 6L6WXT+ and the EH 6L6GC, where one is slightly higher priced then the other one, he leaves the decison with the customer and just clearly mentions these are the same tubes with the only difference the branding/logo.

It is of course not any proof because my tube suppliers say so (even if Dirk did pretty extensive testing on them to compare the two models), it was enough for me to firmly believe my suspicion on these being the same tubes.

very interesting! Thanks for investigating, TJG!

Re: Sovtek 6L6WXT+ vs. EHX 6L6GC

Well, they're both made by Sovtek in the Sovtek factory. Sovtek owns the EH name - along with several others.

I don't think this is right. ElectroHarmonix owns its own name. You don't see the Big Muff Pi coming out of that factory. If I remember correctly--and that's a big if--New Sensor owns the factory and rebrands tubes Mullard, Sovtek, ElectroHarmonix, etc.

Actualy guys, the Russian Big Muff was made by Sovtek hehehe ;)
It is the New Sensor group that is owner of a load of brands and the so called Reflector factory in Russia, they own both EHX and Sovtek along with Tung-Sol, Mullard, Svetlana (not SED Winged =C=, it's a story on itself...) and many more.

You're welcome mate! True thanks goes out to Dirk of TubeFactory in Germany, he was the one who took his time investigating the subject thoroughly! ;)

Ah right on. Then im gonna surmise that what Iam seeing are production variations rather than actual specification differences.
