Anyone ever play one? Circuit designed by Tony Bruno, made in Russia. Well, used to be made in Russia.

Re: Sovtek MIG50?

Hey scott, i know there is a person who has one of these on the forum, and im sure hell get here with the info, i cant rememeber his name but i think it has something reguarding the sovtek in it. Im sure hell hit this thread up in no time.

Re: Sovtek MIG50?

I had one - it sounded great when it sounded great. Sometimes it sounded too bassy - you really have to watch out for the low end on these, and just turn the bass way down. Otherwise split the difference between a Fender and a Marshall in a best-of-both-worlds kind of way. Was loud and warm and sounded great.

Re: Sovtek MIG50?

I hear someone (Fuchs/Butler) would do a mod on these and literally make them a killer plexi????

Re: Sovtek MIG50?

I almost bought one once, theres one in a local pawn broker, I had a play thru it a little bit.
Nothing to jump of a cliff for.
But still better than my Fender S.S, i just didnt have a cab avaliable 4 it.

Re: Sovtek MIG50?

Duke Robillard uses them, so does my buddy AJ. I think they're good sounding amps stock and that they can be modded into great sounding amps. They're close to a 5F6-A Fender Bassman (the 59 version...tweed) but have a solid state rectifier, not a tube rectifier. Similar to a model 1987 small box Marshall 50 watt too but 6L6 tubes...not EL-34's. No master volume so the the JCM 800 analogy doesn't quite describe them. Really, they're closest to the Marshal model 1987 or tweed Bassman. Lew

I was referring to the MIG-50H...didn't know we were discussing the non-MV head.

Re: Sovtek MIG50?

i own the 60 watt version (mig-60) i love the amp to death. i have a ds-1 (soon to have a modded ds-1) in front of the clean channel and with some EQ i've comments that my amp sounds like a cross beween a mesa and JCM 900. i have it running through an avatar 2x12 cab.

as for mods, i might look into in the future but as of now its THE BEST amp you can get for the price and for the most part best in other higher price ranges. the high gain channel channel sometimes sounds like a natural big muff.. SUUUUUPPPPPPEEEERRRR cool

as for the mig 50, the only difference between it and the mig-60 is that i hear the 50 has plastic input jacks instead of steel (replaceable of course)

in short, great amp stock, and a KILLER amp for modders (easy to work with)

Re: Sovtek MIG50?

It always amazes me how cheap they are. I'd like to open one up, compare it to schematics of Bassman/plexi circuits, and see what would be involved in modding.
If it didn't turn out right, at least you didn't start butchering an expensive old amp.
I'm sure that's your rationalle, too.

You'll find that they are very, very similar.

But being a printed circuit board ( and a cheap, thin, printed circuit board at that! ) mods are a delicate procedure. But they certainly can be done. I redid my buddy AJ's Mig50, including lowering the voltages to the plates of the preamp tubes to warm it up and give it more of a true vintage tone kinda between a Marshall JTM-45 and a '59 Fender 5F6-A Bassman.

The pots are cheap...we replaced all of those too.

And we replaced alot of caps with better quality Mallory 150 and Sprague Orange Drops.

AJ's Mig50 is a killer!

The trannys are not the equal of an old Marshall or Fender of course...but they sound very good.

Another alternative is one of those Traynor Bassmasters from the late 60's/early 70's....they have high quality Hammond transformers and can be had for around $300.

They're a Fender Bassman or Marshall Plexi or JTM-45 "clone" too.
