SPB-1 & SJB-1b - OK setup or am I asking for issues?

Hi Guys,

Im a guitar player but recently picked up my first P/J bass. Im looking to swap out the stock pickups for the above mentioned set. However, Im seeing a lot of discussion about a hum issue caused by the single coil jazz pickup. Is it an unruly amount of hum or would it be similar to a p90 60 hum?

Ive also read about the STK-j1b however, Ive seen quite a few posts about low output.

Any suggestions/insight would be greatly appreciated.

welcome to the forum!

stacks do have lower output. the hot stack isnt high output at all but a very nice sounding pup

the sjb-1 is a single coil so it will hum but it isnt unruly at all. no worse than a p90 or strat pup. ive made a few basses with p pups with a single coil jazz bass and havent heard a single complaint about the noise

And running it VVT wont cause any issue with the SJB-1? Thanks for the info thus far

nope, v v t is perfect

the p might have more output depending on heights as would be expected

The output differences created by the pickup placements and physical characteristics mean that the SPB-1 should be expected to overpower the SJB-1. Choosing a higher output J pickup evens things up somewhat. This is primarily of importance for recreating those "honky", notch filtered sounds associated with dual J pickups.

I am not usually a great fan of PJ pairs. The one recent exception to this has been an EMG-35 P4 and -35 J set installed on an Ibanez SRX500, together with an EMG-ABC active Balance control and SD/Basslines Blackouts for Bass 2-band EQ. I suspect that the balance control system is correcting those issues that I complain about.
