Looking for this type of tone,

woody p-bass for my 75' reissue P. Got the flats on the way but the USA Standard pickup in it hasn't got the vibe I'm after. Think Pino, not Steve Harris, more earthy than that when the tones fully open.

So basically, has anybody got samples of, or experience of the pickups listed below. I'm not looking for "yeah I got a SPB-1 its great" I want to know how these compare.

ive heard them both, not side by side but in similar basses. i didnt notice there being a whole lot of difference between them. they were balanced and full with chewy highs when the tone was wide open. i guess i would think its more a string balance issue?

Re: SPB1 - Antiquity I or Antiquity I 'raised A'

The only physical difference is the length of two of the polepiece/magnets. The effect of the extra height of the A poles can be replicated on a flat poles PU by adjusting the A string end of the E/A coil closer to the A string.

Regarding Pino versus Steve. The major differences are rosewood fingerboard against maple and fingertips against fingernails. On some projects, Pino adds a foam mute pad under the strings near the bridge for the James Jamerson effect.

yes the two antiquity I split p bass pups

FWIIW, I am getting almost exactly the same tone as the YT video demonstration using a humble Squier Silver Series P Bass. My Squier is stock except for a Fender USA torty pickguard and a Tusq nut. The pickup is the stock MIJ.

When I think of flatwound P Bass tones, I think of James Jamerson, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd or John McVie in Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.

Not quite sure why SD does the raised A as most players understand that the pickup needs to be balanced in a certain way. It must obviously sound different somewhat. The Q values are different etc but I dunno how this translates to the standard measurements of DC/Res.

Think I'm going to stretch for the Ant 1.

Heres a few samples from a CD I recently recorded. Amp and D.I tracks. Attached is my USA (maple neck) with SPB3 and some finger and pick of the Japan 75RI (rosewood). The 75RI also has a Badass 2, this also needs to go. Both tracks had the tone down at around 3/4's of the way. As you can see from the amps I was trying to get woody but personally I think I just ended with honky.

Re: SPB1 - Antiquity I or Antiquity I 'raised A'

why roll your tone down so much? high end is where the personality comes from. it doesnt come thru in band situation but it does sound different

This model is an accurate recreation of the way Fender built the pickup for a brief period. It would be desirable for a modifier wishing to preserve the cosmetics of a vintage instrument.

Also, one version of the Squier JV Precision Bass came with an MIJ version of the raised A poles split coils pickup.

NOTE: If you want to sell off some of your "unwanted" bass parts, PM me.

Yes I understand that but ideally I didn't want to cut and or want the bass 'cutting' so much in the mix. Usually I play pop punk/rock stuff so this is a different venture. To replicate the thuddy tones I've heard I knocked the tone back.

If I decide to sell the BadAss II I'll let you know!

Re: SPB1 - Antiquity I or Antiquity I 'raised A'

Anyone know why SD do an Ant 1 and 2 series of most their pickups? Just out of curiosity? Different sounds obviously but is one series a classic whilst the others a vintage modified kinda vibe or?

Re: SPB1 - Antiquity I or Antiquity I 'raised A'

Different magnet materials to simulate different degrees of magnet "age-ing".

Re: SPB1 - Antiquity I or Antiquity I 'raised A'

is that across the board? Strats everything? Which ones are the 'older' ones?

Re: SPB1 - Antiquity I or Antiquity I 'raised A'

antiquity I series is alnico II
antiquity II series is alnico V

the II series is actually closer to what fender put out in most cases
