Speaker Advice

Hey ho, long time no see, guys!

I'm about to attempt to build a speaker box for my guitar amplifier. I've got a Mesa Boogie Mark IIb 100watts with a 60watt power cut. At one time, I was running it through a Marshall 2x12 with celestion greenbacks. But I always found that the cab was very boomy and bright, and didn't have fantastic midrange. I was able to dial some of the mids in by tweaking the amp, but it didn't project the mids very well to begin with, so it was more like I was fixing a problem than finding a sweet-spot.

Now I'm thinking that a 1x12 would be more along the lines of what I'm looking for. I intend to use this amp as more of a recording tool than a gigging tool.

So I'm curious what kind of speaker you guys might reccomend. I'm looking at a Weber Blue Pup 100watt speaker at the moment, and I'd appreciate if anyone could tell me some stories about that speaker, or reccomend something that might suit my needs better.

As a refference, if I had all the money in the world, I'd just buy a Vox AC30 combo with Celestion Blues. I've come to think that those speakers have a wonderful smoothness and clarity to them that I really enjoy. But since I'm short on cash at the moment, and need a speaker box, I'm pretty sold on building myself a small cab with an approprate speaker. Anyone have any speaker-related advice, encouragement, or cautions for me?

Cheers,
Celticafro

Re: Speaker Advice

Try a vintage 30 and a g12h. More mids the g12h has great bass and low mids the v30 has high mids and great cut. Great mix.

I do appreciate your advice, but I'm building a *1x12*, and therefore I need a *100w* speaker. Neither of these speakers are of a sufficient power rating for my needs.

Do you know of a possible alternative?

Re: Speaker Advice

I was saying that to get you away form the 1x12. I have never played a 100 watt speaker I liked really well. In fact I have one to sell on ebay this week for this reason.

I really woulndn't mind a 2X12, but monies I don't have. :P Plus, I'm getting into recording. Quieter is a boon, and so is variety. I'll get a 2x12 later.

What 100w speakers have you played, and what did you like/dislike about them? That's the information I'm looking for.

Re: Speaker Advice

The 100 watt celestions that come stock in Jcm 900'sand valvestates. Seems like I tried one in a dsl or tsl once. I am not sure if they are the same model but they were 100 watt. The one in the 900 is the GH-100. I thought they were sterile. They lacked the punch, grit, and cut of the other celestions I own. They are too balanced if that makes sense.

Noted. I'll have a play around with some 100 watters in the stores and keep my ears open. Though, since my amp is so bright, so bassy, and has so much balls, I think a mellower, more balanced speaker is the kind of the sound that I'm looking for. I'm definitely not getting a 30w speaker for a 100w amp!

Re: Speaker Advice

Alot of the Eminance Blue Coat/Red Coat speakers are rated at 150w ea. Not to bad on price either. Might want to check them out, if you haven't already

I was not say to get a 30 watter unless you were using others with it.
Try the 100 watters and see what you think. Good luck

Hey, no, I haven't. I'll give them a look. Have you used/heard one of these speakers before? What's the vibe? :smokin:

Re: Speaker Advice

Weber seems like a great place to start. I'm looking at some Chicago, or Texas speaks for my project ( a 2X12 ). I'm a little worried about a 100, or even 60 Watter in recording, but I'm sure folks do it all the time.

What would be the worry with 100watt speakers, generally? I doubt the loudness would be a problem, since I can cut my amp power and turn the master volume down.
