Speaker "break up"?

Currently I use a MesaBoogie 60w/100w ... before that Marshalls ... before that Fenders ... before that Ampeg

I hear a lot about speaker "break up". My rig is currently an 1x12 EVM12L and has been that way for 28 years. I also had a JBL 2x10 rig from the early '80s. Before that 4x12 Altec 417H (sometimes 2 of these ... GEEZ ... more like wall break up). :smack:

My point is ... it has been a long time since I had a speaker combo that 60w/100w could really push to "break up". Even the 1x12 EVML running 100 watts doesn't really do it ... the speaker is designed like a tank. JBL, Altec, etc ... most don't even manufacture guitar speakers anymore ...

So tell me about speaker break up ... which speakers break up and how does that affect the sound? I'm thinking specifically about another 2x10 rig but interested in the 12" too.

...all speakers break up if you push them hard enough.

Re: Speaker "break up"?

You mostly hear of speaker break up in Vox and Tweed amps. Usually more typical of low powered alnico speakers (like an Alnico blue or an old jensen). But as said before, all speakers can break up, and they do in different ways (of which I am not too familiar).

Re: Speaker "break up"?

speaker breakup is a lot more... case sensetive than you'd think

for instance, IMO the speaker break up sounds horrible on hot rod deluxes & the '57 twin, but nice on vox ac30's & tweed bassmans

Re: Speaker "break up"?

I commend you on your faithfulness to gear. Never seen such loyalty! 28 years!?! Most people get a new rig after 28 DAYS!

Re: Speaker "break up"?

I wasn't always this loyal ... :eek13:

I traded amps and guiitars continuously in the early years ... I had a lot of equipment mostly Les Pauls, Fenders, Marshalls and no pedals ... tone seemed to be specific to each room. Great equipment ... but drove me crazy ... sometimes great ... sometimes crap.

Then I found something predictable ... a rig comfortable that worked the same everywhere I went. It was the '80 Yamaha SA2000 (completely stock - never seen a solder iron), '78 Boogie and EVM12L ... no pedals. Then this rig would just do what I wanted .... everywhere I took it ... I was in love.

But I'm playing around with new gear right now ... 3 new guitars in the last year ... Schecter Tele, Washburn Idol and G&L Legacy. Maybe an alternate set of speakers ... maybe 2x10 with warmer speakers.

But I'll never touch the core rig ... never. :)

But ... on the other hand I might just be boring!
