I'm wondering whether I need to change the stock speaker in my amp (Ampeg Reverberocket 1x12). I love the clean tones and the dirty tones give me all the grit I'm looking for. However, when I turn the gain up past 6, it starts to splatter and lose definition. This is a problem with both single-coil and humbuckers. I don't find myself wanting that much gain, but if I ever did it would be nice to have something useable. Other than that, I'm super happy with the amplifier.
Could a new speaker help here? If so, does anyone have any clips that compare the same guitar and amp with different speakers/cabinets? Or, could it be that the tubes are too hot? I bought the amp used, and I remember the dealer telling me that the last owner put in some hotter tubes.
Any feedback and clips would be very much appreciated.
