Speaker Configurations...

I'm just wondering how different speaker configurations effect tone. The two amps I'm looking at have different configs. One is a 1x12, and the other is a 2x12. How will this effect each's sound?

Re: Speaker Configurations...

one twelve is ok for a room or a miked speaker at a small club. it usually sounds tight and responsive but not real big sound. 2-12's in my opionion have the same tight and responsive tone but also sound bigger and have more ambiance. it also depends on a cabnet size and depth. if its in a combo amp then what you'll get is more ambiance-in my opinion this sounds better and bigger. if its speaker cabs I realy like the tone of a 2-12's speaker cab that is alittle biger depth wise cuz it still sounds tight but cleans sound nice as well and you get more ambiance in the tone. smaller speaker cabs make the speaker sound more tight and percusive but the tone lacks ambiance or depth.-you can get around this somewhat by adding the right amount of reverb and or chorus to thicken up the tone alittle.-good luck :beerchug:

What kind of amp has the 2x10s?

I have a maz jr with 2x10s and I love the sound. The 10s have a really nice thick midrange and don't muddy up the band's sound but fit right in between the bass and the cymbals. 10's are very underrated by guitarists because everyone wants that halfstack. The tens are snappier, especially in a closed back, and that's one of the reasons bassists love them. With an open back they have a special ambience to them that you really need to hear. (tweed bassman or super)
The twelves can pick up more low frequencies and give you the "thump" that you hear people talk about. I'll eventually add a single 12 to my set up for more sound and I have a suspicion that 10s and 12s are the perfect combo. For me and my 18 watts it will have lots of mids, and just enough lows to fill up a club/bar.

To me 12s give you more mids and a darker sound. I have a Nomad 55 (Mesa) with 4 10" Jensens and I love the sweet high end chime and tight bottom end it gives me. Since I play with a clean single coil type tone a lot, I prefer this set up to the single and twin 12 amps I used to use.

Re: Speaker Configurations...

The amps are Peavey Classic 30 1x12 and Peavey Delta Blues 2x10.

I will be playing an MIM Fat Strat through it.

Re: Speaker Configurations...

I used a 112 cab for years and had absolutely no complaints. I switched to a 212 about 10 years ago and it seems like it's a little less focused and definitely more low ended.
