Speaker question. Eminence Cannabis Rex? Tried one?

Snake Aces

Singlecut Slut
I feel bad enough that my obsession with guitars has to harm trees so I'm always looking for ways to curb my guilt. I'm a firm believer in the legalization of hemp if for nothing else than to use it's fibers (it's stronger anyway!) to make rope, paper, cardboard, etc... and it's "petroleum-like" residue for further energy research.

So, with that being said, who has tried an Eminence Cannabis Rex 12"? I've heard they have monster bottom ends but will I still have good mids warmth and plenty of treble? I've never used an Eminence (I've always gone with the Celestion crowd).

My set up? Traynor YCV40 with KT77's and high gain preamp 12AX7's. Don't let the high gain fool you, I did that for earlier break-up (to be able to get good tone break-up at lower volumes) as I play a ton of classic rock styled riffs mixed with funk and a touch of poppy heavy rock (minor key using an american big muff pi, not relative major key pop-punk using a tubescreamer).

Thanks for asking.

I want to know how it sounds too. If you look at the frequency response curves on the Eminence site, the Cannibis Rex appears to have less dramatic upper mid dip than any other speaker in that power handling range. But how about real world tone?

Re: Speaker question. Eminence Cannabis Rex? Tried one?

i use one in my deluxe reverb and i love it. ive tried the stock speaker (the amp is an early '66), a celestion v30, alnico gold, jensen c12n, p12n, and emi texas heat and i like the rex better than all of them. fat and warm but balanced. i had it in there for a while then i decided that a celestion alnico gold might be even better, i was wrong. just cause it cost three times as much doesnt mean its even gonna sound as good. the rex went back in, bigger fuller with a smoother top end.

i have a pair of eminence ch2010 hemp bass speakers that i really like too. so much in fact ive ordered a lil buddy which is an emi 10" guitar speaker to replace the jensen p10q matched up with the red fang in my aislinn 6l6

not a good choice for a dark amp if you like a bright tone but great in my amp. ive also heard it in blues jr and some other fender amps and it sounded really good

Hmmmm, it might make a good speaker for my new(old) 1968 Bassman...right now I have g12-65s and they have enough brightness, for sure.

Re: Speaker question. Eminence Cannabis Rex? Tried one?

jeremy sold me!!

he sold me on KT77's a few months back and I never looked back. I trust his advice a ton now!

Re: Speaker question. Eminence Cannabis Rex? Tried one?

Great!

It sounds like you've paid for the research, Jeremy. My Peavy Prowler is a little on the dark side, but I still think I'm gonna go for it. The stock Blue "Marvel" is beyond lame.

Re: Speaker question. Eminence Cannabis Rex? Tried one?

Where is your Peavy's brightness switch or whatever they call it on those things? I thought Peavy's were notorious for articulation and loudness...

Re: Speaker question. Eminence Cannabis Rex? Tried one?

There is a brightness switch on the front panel just above the manual channel switcher.
Good plan ..... maybe I should press that button. I played a real bright guitar (Yamaha Pacifica 604) through the amp for a few years and got used to never touching the bright switch. My strat and Blackjack are both dark compared to the Pacifica. Thanks for waking me up.

Overall, the Prowler is a good sounding 6L6 amp, but does need a speaker to smooth things out a bit.

Sounds like we both found a new speaker today then!!

Re: Speaker question. Eminence Cannabis Rex? Tried one?

I use one on my 59 Bassman clone in a 2X12 tweed cab. I use that with a G12H30 and the mix is heavenly. The Rex took a LONG time to break in, but it's a sweet speaker giving me a real warm, bluesy and rock sound and it takes to my Plexitone like a champ. To me, it's a perfect speaker for anything from blues to old school metal.

Thanks for the heads up on the long break in!
The clips sound good. What are you using for delay.
