Speaker Reconing?

I just picked up a Marshall Straight Cabinet today- A 1960BC the cosmetically similar straight mate to my old JCM800 G12-65 loaded Angled Cabinet. Its loaded with greenbacks, but eventually, I'm gonna wanna install four G12-65's. We all know that the prospect of buying a used speaker on ebay is perilous, and in this case, very expensive, so I am looking at pickup up a quad of G12-65's that need recone.
Only trouble is, I got to thinking , by the time I buy the speakers, send them to Weber for recone, and get them back, I'm probably looking at 400 bucks, which is about the same as buying a vintage used set.
Now, I could take a chance on Ebay..its not that huge of a deal as far as getting ripped off, because you can send a bad speaker back..
But if theres no benefit pricewise to reconing , then I might be better off hunting down the best deal for a used set. Granted it would be difficult to find a set in excellent condition for a reasonable price.
This is just for future reference.It will be a good long while before I can do anything with this.

No way you're gonna get a set of 4 older G12-65's for $400

Now, I could take a chance on Ebay..its not that huge of a deal as far as getting ripped off, because you can send a bad speaker back..
But if theres no benefit pricewise to reconing , then I might be better off hunting down the best deal for a used set. Granted it would be difficult to find a set in excellent condition for a reasonable price.

Because the bottom angled cabinet has old 12-65's. I think running greenbacks with the 12-65's in a full stack might not be such a great idea-added to the fact a full stack loaded with G-12-65's would be awesome with my '77 JMP.

Ive had issues with lots of stuff off ebay. Speakers are notorious for having issues on ebay and everywhere else. The hassle of trying them, and then having to pay return shipping can be pretty traumatic.

Cause a guy here has a quad for sale that need reconing, and You can still get the exact same kits for the cones form Celestion- the Celestion 80(?) is the exact same cone.

Oh sure, ya just can't be in a hurry. Ya gotta be diligent. Know how long Ive wanted a straight cabinet to make a full stack?..a long long time, and today I found a Greenback loaded cabinet in satisfactory condition for 230 dollars.A good deal for an angled cabinet but an especially nice deal for a straight..I rarely see the straights come available at anything but close to top dollar.
I've seen the G12-65's come and go on ebay. Some/most are priced at top dollar ( 400 plus), but every now and then you see a pair or single listed for a reasonable price, and if youre lucky..a steal.

He knows I have a quad that I'll sell, honestly they don't need reconed though, just some patching would do.

I've got a second quad in perfect condition...

dude, why don't you just grab Weber's g1265 clones? or WGS ET65s if you're trying to control your budget.

Speaker reconing seems to have gone up significantly in the past 10 to 15 years. I used to take speakers down to this guy Eddie, who worked out of his house two miles away and barely spoke any English. $20 or $30 for a 10 or 12 inch speaker. Not bad.. At those prices, it even made sense to recone OEM speakers, so that is what I always did. I did not buy my first aftermarket speaker until fairly recently, because Eddie was there.

Now, Eddie has passed away, and you would never know that he had his business there for decades by looking at the house. The lowest price I can find for a 12 inch speaker recone is about $60, and that is all the way across town on the west side (yuck). I really wanted to get the stock speaker for my Ampeg Jet II reconed, but with decent replacements from $40 to $80, it just made no sense. The Eminence Legend 50W Greenback clone sounds really good, but sometimes I miss the tone of the stock 20W OEM Eminence that came in the amp. Besides! It has a cool Ampeg sticker on the back! Oh well. I guess I can learn to recone speakers myself, or it will just sit.

Repair and refurbishing services for products are just not what they used to be, in most areas. Stuff just gets chucked and replaced now. So few people know how to repair stuff, and when they do, it is pricey! It's very sad.

i had a pair of speakers reconed....the recone alone cost as much as a pair of new speakers. i did it to keep a vintage amp all original...trouble was that even tho the speakers were alnicos, they still didint sound as good as modern speakers.
I reckon you better off keping the greenbacks, or buying some 65 clones.

I don't know if it's been suggested above somewhere, but if it were me I would mix the two different speakers in an "X" pattern and end up with two matching cabinets, one slant, one straight......no further investment needed!

The Celestion G12-65 Heritage series are brand new and only in the $200 range

Yeah, but he can have my quad for around 2 bills. If he really wants to recone the 3 ripped ones that's only about 200 more. So half the price a set of new reissues would cost for a set of originals. I dunno, sounds like an OK deal to me.

I do have a vested interest here though, nevermind me.

I did look into reconing for a pair of ripped cones, but I cant find anyone who does it for under 100 bucks. I suppose I could try and patch the tears.

With unlimited minutes you could call an awful lot of music stores in your state (and beyond if need be!) to see if anybody has what you want. A store is probably less likely to rip you off. It's a lot of work you bet. You could even do a WTB is craigslist but I'd not go outside of your locale for obvious reasons. Think of it this way: The chase is usually a lot more fun than the finish anyway ;) -Rod-

I'd probably just go for new speakers from WGS or Weber if I were you. Actually I'd keep the greenbacks unless they're wonky.
