Speaker suggestion for 5E3 Deluxe

Scott is ready to build my 5E3 and needs to know what speaker I want. I am not sure really what to tell him. He is suggesting a mojo greenback or the mojo american vintage 12. Any other opinions?

Re: Speaker suggestion for 5E3 Deluxe

The absolute best speaker in a 5E3 Deluxe is the Celestion G12 Alnico Blue.

The Celestion Greenback needs more bass and I don't think it's the best choice...it's a very good speaker, but not the best choice. I don't know about the Mojo...I tried them at NAMM and liked them but I'm not sure the voicing is totally appropriate for a 5E3.

Something like the Mojo Red Fang or Weber P12B, both of which are I believe inspired by the Celestion Alnico Blue, would probably be my pick over any other Mojo. The original blueframe '57 or '58 Jensen P12Q also sounds great in a 5E3...maybe there's a nice clone available of that speaker? Maybe the Jensen P12Q reissue? I think the Talos amp we heard at NAMM had a P12Q in it...sounded very good!

IMO, you need a speaker with good efficiancy, strong bass and strong treble and strong but clearish plucky mids in a 5E3 to bring out the best in it.

I use mid 60's Celestion G12 alnicos in my two original Fender Deluxes. So does David Lindley. The reissue from Celestion is expensive but worth it...that's the speaker I'd use.

Thanks Lew... I keep running into this same speaker the more and more I research the 5E3 stuff!!

Re: Speaker suggestion for 5E3 Deluxe

i use a texas heat in mine and i like it. im sure i would like an alnico blue in there and ive thought of putting a weber alnico silver bell in there.

in general i think lew description of what you should look for in a speaker is right on. something thats loud with a clear thick but not dark tone

Re: Speaker suggestion for 5E3 Deluxe

The only reason I ask without going with one of Scott's suggestions is just my pure lack of experience with the Mojos. What can you tell me abought them and how do they compare to an original Deluxe speaker? (for the original Deluxe tone?)

Re: Speaker suggestion for 5E3 Deluxe

i think the original speaker was a jensen that probably sounded a little thin. im sure the blues sound amazing, they sound great in anything that ive heard them in but they are expensive!!! like $250 each. im thinking that ted weber sells his alnico blue dog for $175 which might be a just as good an option for less money

Re: Speaker suggestion for 5E3 Deluxe

the original speakers were Jensen P12Rs, and yes, they were wimpy. later, they were replaced by P12Qs, which were better

I use a Jensen P12Q Reissue in my 5E3 clone. Some like 'em, some don't (I do). They run about $80. I also use 'em in my Victoria Double Deluxe.

I can't speak for Scott, but I think his suggestions are based on the fact that ceramic speakers help tighten the bass, and the tendency for these amps to break up quickly.

I'd love to hear the Red Fang - it's rated about right, at 30 watts, and it's an alnico speaker, supposedly their version of the Celestion Blues. I just like hearing the nasal honk and rip of those alnico speakers!

Re: Speaker suggestion for 5E3 Deluxe

The C12Q is like the P12Q that Curly uses, just ceramic. (tighter bass and a bit more headroom, less brittle)

Re: Speaker suggestion for 5E3 Deluxe

i know guys who love the c12q but it doesnt do much for me, a p12N sounds nice
