Speaker Suggestions

Hello ... I bought a Bugera V5 amp, and I was thinking about replacing the 8" speaker w/ a 10". I was hoping to get some suggestions on which brand/model might be a good fit. I play mostly classic/alt rock, and I'd prefer a vintage sound over a modern one. I want something with a good low end, and not too trebly. I want something that handles pedals well, especially distortion. There are some decent priced Jensen & Eminence speakers on Musiciansfriend, but wanted to get suggestions from people who care about tone. Thx!

Re: Speaker Suggestions

I am not familiar with that amp, so maybe I am asking a stupid question......how are you going to install a 10" speaker in a 8" hole.? Are you going to cut the baffle.?

Yeah, it looks like there is room, so I'm going to make a few cuts.

Well as far as vintage tone and rock goes I would say Jensen P10R, it also handles any distortion well cause it can take any treble boost you will threw at it, but it sound is definetly on the bright side of things.

When fitting new speaker check if parts of amp wont interfere. My 5W tube Peavey was such a close fit that edge of transformer literaly went inside the original speaker basket. It really isnt easy to measure if holes in basket of new speaker will line up properly. Then it turned out that alnico magnet cover of new speaker interfered with the tip of power tube cover, so I had to rotate the new speaker by 45 degrees. Your cab may be bigger, but you also want to accomodate larger speaker.

I'm a big fan of what Weber has been offering. Good quality and sound and they usually are not to expensive. Plus I believe that have a few 8" speakers so you wouldn't have to modify the baffle.

Thx for the suggestion! I guess I should have mentioned that I want to keep it under $50. There is a Weber Signature series and a Jensen mod10 that both get pretty reviews on Musiciansfriend, I may grab one of those.

Re: Speaker Suggestions

You can get the straight from weber. Check eBay too, you will usually see a few on there for not too much.

Re: Speaker Suggestions

How do you plan to get the 10" speaker into the 8" amp? Big hammer?
