Speaker Swap Help

Hey everyone, just needing a little bit of help with something. I've been trying out some different speakers in my DRRI. I have a C-Rex in it right now, and it sounds pretty good, but I also have a Celestion G12H30 that I am wanting to try out in it and see how it sounds.

As most of you may know, the DRRI has 8 speaker mounting bolts on the speaker baffle. I want to try the Celestion but it only has 4 holes in the frame. I was planning on removing the speaker baffle and grill cloth and just removing 4 of the bolts but that isn't going to work. The speaker baffle is just one piece and the grill clothes is stapled to the baffle, so I don't want to take the cloth off of the baffle. Also, with where the power outlet in the back of the amp is located, I can't even get to all of the screws to remove the baffle (that darn power outlet won't budge without breaking it!).

So I was thinking about taking the speaker and amp chassis out of the cabinet and just cutting 4 of the bolts off of the baffle with the saw on my dremel. That way I could mount the Celestion in the amp, and I think the other speakers would still mount just fine with just 4 bolts? Any suggestions?

Re: Speaker Swap Help

yes, most people cut the bolts and other speakers work just fine after that.

I said screw that though I had weber use an 8 bolt frame when they built my GB. it's one of the first things I noticed when I looked at the stock c12k I was used to a vox 112 and I said 8 boltzorz WTF?!?
but yeah dremel away just be careful!

also congrats on the new speaker! Should be fantastic.

Re: Speaker Swap Help

Why do you have to remove the T-nuts anyway? Can't you put the speaker in with just 4 screws?

Re: Speaker Swap Help

Why not drill four extra holes in the speaker. Eight screws are better than four in the first place.

Alright cool. Yeah I wish they made every speaker with the same amount of holes in the frame! Lol I would have ordered an 8 bolt speaker, but I picked this one up used in a trade.

Well the bolts are mounted on the baffle sticking out and you have to just carefully place the speaker on the bolts. I wish they would have made these with threaded insterts in the baffle and you just put the bolts in... would make it much easier.

I thought about that, but I didn't want to screw up the speaker and take the chance of drilling a hole of center or damaging the speaker. Plus I'm sure it would decrease the value of the speaker if I end up not liking it. Also, if I just drilled holes in the speaker, if I ever wanted to try another 4 bolt speaker in the amp, I would have to do that to every speaker.

Re: Speaker Swap Help

I see, they put in bolts from the front side and you put nuts on the back side of the speaker. Only options are to grind them off, knock them out, or don't use the H30. I don't think I would drill holes in the speaker frame unless I KNEW that's what I wanted in there, even then, I'd probably take the baffle and cloth off and bang those ****ers out. It went together somehow, it's gotta come apart too.
