Speaker swap question

Hello,

Have a very general question here. I have a dsl40c amp. I find the breakup a bit fizzy, regardless of tinkering settings for long periods of time. I've read a number of people suggesting to swap the speakers. This may be a stupid question but:

I have a cab loaded with 2 x 12 Celestion G12 Vintage speakers. If i play through through the cab, will it give me a good representation of what the amp would sound like if i swapped the speaker?

Main difference that may be a variable is that my cab is closed back while the combo is obviously open.

Thoughts?

Re: Speaker swap question

Yeah, it's gonna end up sounding different. There are so many variables in speakers and cabinets that little things make big differences.

Which speaker do you have in there? The Seventy/Eighty or the Creamback M65?

Re: Speaker swap question

Pretty sure 70/80. Gonna try it through my cab tomorrow. Very interested to see if it will eliminate the sound my ears would describe as a fizzy breakup. Really seemed like something eq should/could eliminate but tweaked it for a long time with no luck. I'm thinking it's the speaker.

Re: Speaker swap question

It will sound different but should give you some idea of the tonal characteristics of the speakers.

I only recently started the speaker swap game, and not only is it easy, but also addictive and can have a huge impact on your sound. I think something like a Creamback, probably the H75 would sound good with a DSL and tame the fizziness you mention but still retain good top end bite. It will just be smoother.

Sounds great plugged into my cab. I'm very pleased.

Imo the clean channel of my dsl through my jubilee cab blows my mini jubilee away. The jubilee sounds stiff in comparison.

Replacing that 70/80 with almost ANYTHING will get rid of that fizzy breakup. LOL There was (is?) a run of the DSL40C that came with a Creamback M65 from the factory that sound AWESOME.

Re: Speaker swap question

If you do replace that 70/80, and it happens to be 16ohms, let me know.

Re: Speaker swap question

I think the creamback version came out about a month after i purchased mine. I'm quite pleased with the dsl through my cab. For now, it'll be the way i use it. That stock speaker isn't horrible but it puzzled me for a whole night, how could i reduce the fizz. Initially, would have sworn it was just a eq thing.

Re: Speaker swap question

I will say that 70/80's do sound better after they have been broken in. Still a lot of top end though.
