Speaker Wire Guages 12 Or 16 For 4x12 Re-wire

I am re-wiring a couple of friends cabs. 3 Marshalls and 1 Ampeg 8x10 bass cab. I already re-wired my Mesa cab with Monster car audio wire at 16guage thickness. I found some Monster cable that was 12 guage but it would not fit thru the holes of my speaker terminals so I didnt use it.

My question is, Can I use the 12 guage wire and just lay it on the terminal and solder it or should it definateley go thru the terminal hole? Is the hole only for stability or does it affect the sound?

Would the 12 guage make a noticible difference or not compared to the 16 guage?

Does anyone have a type or company of speaker wire thats they consider the shiznit?

Is using car audio wire as opposed to cut up speaker cable better?

Any thoughts? I need to rewire some cabs tomorrow and was wondering what some of the informed people on this site thought bout 12 guage wire soldered to the terminals on speakers without going thru the terminal holes? Any difference other than stability?

well, from what ive learned from other forumites, the best cable is fairly inexpensive car wire, not premium priced speaker cable wire.

And as for that hole, im pretty darn sure it would not affect the sound, as long as you solder a decent amount of wire to the terminal. The whole terminal is a conductor (probably nickel) so if you solder to the tip of it only, it would sound the same.

Clean your iron with flux and make sure you make a clean joint so it will never come off.
