speakers and multimeters

if I stick my multimeter on the 20Ω setting, and put the leads on a speaker's terminals which are not connected to an amp, and I get 13.2 Ω, is it probably a 16Ω speaker?
I always thought my speaker was 16 then I look on celestion's site and it says that one comes in 8. Is my speaker some discontinued, older version or did the seller lie to me and say it was 16 when they only make 8?
I'm new to the world of digital multi-meters, so help me out if you know about this kinda thing.

it's a celestion super 65.

Re: speakers and multimeters

13.2 is about the average DC resistance reading for a 16 ohm speaker- 6-7 ohms for an 8 ohm speaker, 2-3 ohms for a 4 ohm speaker.
Remember, you are measuring DC resistance, the speaker, when connected to your amp is running AC. Also remember the ohms rating for speakers is nominal (lowest) resisitance and in operation, the ohms load is jumping all around the place, as the speaker moves in and out. Just as long as it doesn't dip lower than whatever it is rated for.
Also, Celestion markets that Super 65 also as an oem speaker, so it could come in any ohm load the amp mfg specifies.

Re: speakers and multimeters

When I have tried this on my 8ohm speakers, the reading was ~5.6ohms. I would say yours are 16ohm speakers.

Re: speakers and multimeters

Impedance of speakers is usually measured in ac at 1 kHz I think.
Does your multi meter have an AC option for impedance measurements?

I dont think so. it was $3 and seems to be the "basic" DMM

ah, that must be why i got it so cheap, overstock on OEM stuff probably. Cool though I think my fears have been laid to rest.

This celestion is OK and all that, but I'd really prefer something better. It does have a little of that "stock speaker" feel, could have a lil more clarity.

I'm thinking of throwing in an emi governor or something. I wish greenbacks could handle 50 to 75W

You're looking for the Private Jack, my friend. I don't have experience with the Private Jack, but Eminence bills them as their version of the Greenback with higher power handling.

Either that or the Wizard. I've got a Wizard paired with a Governor, and neither one breaks up very easily. The pair takes high gain like a champ, and the cleans are pretty decent as well. Very full, definitely not lacking in any area, but still more bright than chimey, if that makes sense.

By itself, I find it a bit difficult to get bluesy types of tones from the Governor. You might find the Governor by itself a bit bright. The Wizard is Emi's take on the G12H-30, and it gets rave reviews.

By the way, I don't hesitate to recommend Eminence alongside Celestion whatsoever. I've played Vintage 30 cabs, and I prefer the Governors. I also prefer that over any G12T-75 cab I've ever played.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I got a quick question for ya Whizzy !!

I was curious where you heard that the Wizard was Emi's take on the Celestion G12H30. Being that the Wizard's can handle 75w compared to the G12H's 30w handling...not saying I don't believe you...was just interested where you heard that info.

right I know about private jack and the greenback comparison, but a single PJ can only take 50W and my amp is right there at 50, so a single PJ is a no-no. I need to stick with single 12" configs while I'm stuck in an apartment... but I want power handling available when i need it, as I take the amp to people's houses to jam on occasion.
The wizard does sound a lot better than the governor when you describe em that way.
I like celestion and eminence almost equally, but I feel like eminence does a better job marketing an affordable product with good descriptions so that one can make a choice. I've used a few OEM eminences, the Screamin Eagle, and the Legend v128, and I liked all of em, but especially the Screamin Eagle.
I'd love a 2x12 with a PJ and a wizard, but right now, that's overkill.
