Speakers for 4x12" 1960 slanted, G12-65 clones

Something Cool
Time for some overthinking...

I have an empty early 1980ties 1960 slanted cabinet. For a 1979 2204 JMP 50-watts hamster volume 2-input.

I have 2x 8 ohm EV12L.

Sound-wise, I like G12-65s. I'm not going to buy new Celestions, at least not before trying clones.

So, for clones for G12-65s I have these choices:
  • Emminence tonespotter $80
  • WGS (warhouse guitar speakers) 12" ET65 $60 (made in U.S.)
  • Weber 1265 $105

I would normally be crazy enough to get one of each, test them, then get more of the winner but projects pile up too high. So I think I'm gonna take a pick and get two of whatever comes and combine them with the EVs and then go from what I hear there.

I hear enough good stuff about the WGS speakers that I could just pounce on them.

Questions:

1) Is there anybody who thinks that the Weber or Emminence would be the better choice?

2) What impedance would I get for this? I think 8 ohms for 8 ohms total out of the 4x12, no?

You want to get speakers that'll keep up with a 50w Hamster Volume amp?

If you want it like it would have been a cab that came with that head it would be a 16 ohm cab with 16 ohm speakers wired in series parallel.

If you have 2 8 ohm EV's then the other 2 speakers need to be 8 ohms as well..a set of 4 8 ohm speakers can be wired for 8 ohms.

As for the choices...those WGS speakers just do not impress me, none of them. I've heard some of the sond alright, not amazing but alright but I;ve also seen a guy go though over a half dozen to get one out of the box that didn't have a voice coil rub and or cone cry...no thanks!

The new Eminence speakers are alright but if it were me I'd go with a Weber any day over an Eminence.

Hmmm, doesn't make it much easier, does it? I have the CD with the different speaker recordings, but the WGS is missing from it.

My impedance question was more focused on: do I get any advantage out of making a 16 ohms cabinet? Does the head care at all? It has the switches but I think the output transformer is partially out of the picture at certain loads, right?

Re: Speakers for 4x12" 1960 slanted, G12-65 clones

I finally got around to listen to them on the CD. The Emminence is right out, by a mile. Sounds more like a V30 to me . The Weber is kinda allrightish but doesn't have the G12-65's drive.

There's no recording for the WGS. So I can jump into the deep end and try them or start hunting for used Celestions.

Dangit.

What are you saying about the "drive"? Also, what are you comparing to??

This CD:
http://www.gtraudio.com/products.html

Has the Celestion, the Emminence and the Tonespotter.

The Celestion has a very focused mid-drive, almost a roar. The Emminence is outright fizzy, the Tonespotter more even and clear.

Re: Speakers for 4x12" 1960 slanted, G12-65 clones

I'm getting the ET65 but I also have never played a GT-65. I just know that it is the type of speaker I need because I'm sick of the lacking mids in the G12T-75. I like everything else but the scoop so I'm going to get some ET65s when I can finance it.

Re: Speakers for 4x12" 1960 slanted, G12-65 clones

The CD has the weber 1265, the celestion g12-65 heritage and the tonespotter. I think I mixed up the designations above.

I first compared all celestions to each other, picking the G12-65 as clear winner (to be expected, I liked it before) and then I listened to the G12-65 and the two which are supposedly clones.
