Speakers for 72' Reverb

A few weeks ago... The scratching began. Finally, I must lay my Fender Utah speakers to rest. I now have to venture into the grounds of replacements, I was thinking either Celestion Greenbacks or Golds, I am looking for the absolute clearest, cleanest speakers possible. I have heard much about the legendary sound of a greenbacks, but I don't want the sound to be so legendary that it out legendarizes the Twins sound. I'd also like to now how they operate when you play loud as hell... I don't have a Reverb because I like to play quiet, if I wanted an amp to play quiet through I'd have bought a Marshall utahere:

I had a Deluxe Reverb an really liked the Cannibis Rex in it.

Did the Rex really capture that clean slate tone that Fender's normally have?

I had a Drri with a greenback and I loved it and only sold it cuz it was still just so loud and clean and the amp being a reissue was very bright and I ended up with a orange or15. The greenback was a Weber. It was still very very fender in flavor just imo improved a lot over stock
The speakers broke up in a musical way when pushed but if you want clean clean clean I'd get something higher headroom. Weber will do a 50w version of a greenback for you though

Its good to hear that my first options didn't suck. I haven't heard much that Golds do that Greens don't excel at.

alnico mags give a different and distinctive texture, it's only worth it IMO if you're after "that" sound

I have a Cannibis Rex 16ohm in a convertible (currently closed) cabinet. I think that they have a very nice clean tone and would complement a Fender very well.

I put Celestion G12T-75s in my 72 Quad Reverb and couldn't be happier.

greenbacks are not clean or clear sounding speakers. they are 25w each, breakup early and have lots of woody mid range and not a lot of bottom. they are awesome speakers but are under powered for a twin reverb. i love the cannabis rex and its a better match if you want a darker speaker. big bottom, even mids, smokey top end, and LOUD. handles 50w each which is better but still not perfect for such a stout amp. the utah's you had in there are much brighter too so it would be a big tonal change.

the cleanest clearest speakers are something like a jbl d120 or a clone. good even sounding high powered speaker and sound great in a twin. watch out for the aluminum domed ones. they are really bright

I changed because the stock speaker sounded like it was farting out at louder volumes. The CRex was a lot smoother and cleaner sounding to me.

Any of the top three will require a crane or forklift to move the amp.

The EVM is the best clean speaker around. You get out of it exactly what you put in. Both of my Celestion choices sound really good in 212, combos.

twin reverb. texas heats. perfect for the job of punching out all that clean horsepower and volume. at 150 watts each they can handle everything a twin can dish out with zero flabbiness. They are also nice and thick in the mids so they warm up the scoop sound inherent in the twin's tone circuit. They have smooth highs so that you can actually use the bright switch if you want and it sounds nice and crisp. The other advantage is that they are less efficient than most speakers, so that it means you can turn your twins volume up a notch to two higher than you could with jensens or jbl type speakers and get a fat clean sound because the tubes are actually doing some work.
In low wattage amps there are other nicer speakers for sure, but in a twin reverb, texas heats are the bomb.
