Speakers for a convertible 2x12

Hey guys, hopefully you guys can help me out this time. I need some help picking speakers for a 2x12 I'm gonna order from Whitebox. They mostly offer eminence, but they can install some v30s if I want too. I've heard there cabs are a bit big sounding and bassy enough to balance out the icepick of v30s, but I'm still not so sure that's the route I want to go. Any suggestions?

Re: Speakers for a convertible 2x12

V30's are great. They cut through the mix like a razor. I've never got the whole ice pick highs thing. My amps all have tone controls as I'm sure yours do. Folks used to a more scooped mid sound might find them a tad aggressive but when your trying to be heard in a live/band setting they are very nice.

I know the mids are where it's at, but I'm afraid (possibly wrongfully) that they will be too bright with my already kind of bright amp. I know upper mids ≠ bright, but that term "icepick" just sounds so terrible lol

Re: Speakers for a convertible 2x12

If it helps any my amp is a V32 palomino, but I want the cab to sound good with pretty much any head for most styles of rock.

Icepick is a term used to describe an abundance of shrill highs.
V30's actually have very little highs. It's the upper mids that are so present that they often get confused with treble. Especially when played at low to medium volume levels. V30's really shine and show there true sound at high volume.
I would look into some Eminence Governors which are V30esque but a bit smoother and clearer sounding.
Two will make a 2x12 cab 150 watts, which is a great balance for a 100 watt head.

Do Governors sound good at lower volume? I've heard they are smoother than V30s but overall maintains that same character. Any other eminence speaker to combine with a governor? Not that 2 wouldn't be good. I'm afraid a wizard would be too bright and in your face.

For what it's worth, I use a Cannabis Rex with a v30 and it really balances out the tone. Warm, woody, with a little bright punchiness from the v30.

While I still had my V32, I put a Greenback and a V30 in the cab. Do it. Just do it.

I play a Mesa Stiletto, one of the amps with the most highs I have ever played, into a 2x12 loaded with v30s. Never have I had problems with anything close to the "icepick" wound. You can hear me in a 4 guitar setup though. :)

Do you have any clips?

I think I'm convinced I need to go with a V30 type speaker for this cab. It seems like everyone from pop to metal has them in an Mesa, Orange, or even Marshall cab. What's the major difference between a V30 and a Governor? I can get V30s for a bit cheaper, but if the Governors sound better the price increase is negligible.

I don't have clips, but I can surely get something down in the next few days. I'll PM you before the weekend.

Re: Speakers for a convertible 2x12

For what you describe, a 2x12 with with a combo of Governor/Wizard is real hard to beat. Those speakers handle Blues, Blues-Rock, Classic-Rock, and straight ahead Jazz very well.
Best

Re: Speakers for a convertible 2x12

I love the Wizard and Governor combo. The Governors by themselves lacked a bit of fullness, but the Wizard fixed it right up. And for what it's worth, the balanced EQ of the Wizard actually tames the upper-mids of the Governor a little bit without removing the punch. I love this setup, and it stopped me looking for speakers.

Re: Speakers for a convertible 2x12

I run all v30's, as i've found they dependably sound good to great in all situations and all genres. Great platform for all styles and i've yet to find a bad tone - no "icepick" or whatever people claim to run in to. Really warm, thick, and sensetive to EQ and gain settings. For keeping it simple and versatile - highly reccomend.

Re: Speakers for a convertible 2x12

I would go V30 and Greenback combo. It sounds great!

Re: Speakers for a convertible 2x12

I'm not a fan of V30s.
I had one in my Mesa F-30 and it sounded good but I think that's because Mesas tend to sound bass heavy to begin with.

I plugged my JCM800 into the V30 and it was shrilly with ice pick highs.

I'm not familiar with the Palamino amp so I'm not sure what it's tone characteristics are but I really like CL80s.
They have strong mids, tight lows and no ice pick highs.
They are punchy & crunchy.

I currently have a CL90 in my JCM800 combo and an Avatar 2x12 cab with CL80s. They sound great.

Here's a low quality vid of Mesa F-50 I used to have. I put in a Celestion CL80 and was very happy with the results.
Really nice cleans around 1:40

Great clip and great playing!

Unfortunately, I don't have the option to get CL80s for my cab because it will be a whitebox and the only celestions they offer is the V30. I'm going to go with those because it is the "standard" for speakers these days, and since I don't have a lot of experience with what I do/don't like about speakers, I figure it will be a good starting point.

Re: Speakers for a convertible 2x12

i recommend to give the eminence governor a try as well. i liked it a lot

people who claim the quality ad moderate volumes imo didn't take the time get it worn in.
needs a little more time
