Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

i've got a lot of the grounds covered for a good hard rock ->stoner sound. most everything but the the correct speakers. these will be going into a marshall jcm 900 1960A slant cab.

my signal line right now...which is gonna have more in it.
PRS SE soapbar/Strat with p90 neck/es 335 sort of -> dano PB&J -> homemade fuzz -> guild maverick -> 2x10 speakers in the combo...open back -> this 4x12 when needed

the maverick is fairly bright overall. so i want some warmer speakers. the g1275s in there right now are like a pocket knife going in a vag as opposed to the proper cylindrical man tool. in other words, they cut through like a mofo. i want to play heavier stuff nowadays. the maverick has a treble reducer switch to take care of my jazz needs so that's not really an issue. i'm looking for a sort of QOTSA tone. idk what else i can use to describe it. that sort of deep distortion that has a fair amt of clarity but still warmth. i prolly can't get it perfect. but i'm hoping i can get it close. :D

also...something cool. maybe i could do mismathced speakers...like an X or whatever. and then just make it into a switchable 2x12. ya know? like have speakers for a certain sound in an X and use the switch on there or something (new one?) to switch between the two sides of the X....just me comin up with these crazy thoughts. LOL

anyways...suggestions?

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

I got a Fane Studio 12 speaker in my Marshall. 200 watts, sounds **** good. Actually it's the only speaker I've ever used in a guitar setting.

Pretty useless post, eh? :p

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

Thunder=G12H30 or EVs or Fane.

IMO

The G12H30 is going to be rounder sounding than the EVs and have a smoother high end.

Fanes are going to be....LOUD clear and articulate.

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

You could start by leaving the G12T-75's on the front porch of your worst enemy. Then for not a whole lot of money, but a lifetime of tone, get yourself a set of Eminence Governor and Wizard speakers. If you are a Celestion man it would be similar to a cab full of V30's and G12H-30's. Accept with the Eminence your cab will easily take 250 watts (4x12). JMO of course.
Good Luck ;)

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

ok guys. thanks for the suggestions. i think i'm gonna go withe the eminence that have been suggested, as those are cheaper. :D

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

what about the eminence delta pro 12? eminence version of the evm12L so it should easily give you that downtuned sludge you are after. governor and wizard are good too but also look at the manowar

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

i didn't know that the delta pro was a copy of the EVM!!! very nice!!! i'll definately look into that. SO MANY CHOICES!

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

I kinda like my *GREENBACK's for all genre's to be honest !

My ex-guitar playing buddy (in his 40's now) just ordered TWO Celestion GOLD's last week - eeeeeekk - no idea where a married man get the money for two GOLD's !!!
But then again, he did have money to buy a brand new Mesa Stiletto Deuce II.

I'll see/hear how it sounds in his 2x12 when it comes & renderring him bankrupt :D

* ...or Private Jack's, also very good for Stoner - to my ears !!!

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

^LOL.

i'm really considering the Delta Demons. i loved the EVM's that i played a while back. i mean that i really liked them

Then you might want to look into a set of Cannabis Rex (hemp) speakers.

They will warm up your tone in .0001 seconds = with the every first string you slam !

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

ok. tooooooo many choices. hahaha

i'll take a poll after i collect some more ideas.

edit: and get the maverick to see how it sounds

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

The Emi Man-0-Wars are gonna be aggresive in the highs. I would say get a used pair of EV force 12 guitar speakers.
I hate to say this, becuase Im looking for a pair too and dont want any competiton, but to be honest they are the last of the line ev production speakers. EV no longer nanufatures guitar speakers If Im not mistaken. They arent entirely like a EV12l( which will give you a huge stoner sound with big low end, but will be extremely heavey). The force 12's use neodynium(sp.?)I believe, so they are light but still have some low punch, but are well rounded and softer in the highs. Not too many people are hip to them , and they go for less than a bill each. They are EV's waht can I say?
As far as the Cannibis Rexs', Im not sure thats the stoner sound , more like a warm sparkly Fender vintage tone.
Yeah, if you want new I'd say the Emi. EV copies.
One other thing you might consider is a used pair of Peavey Scorpions. Very Punchy with percussive lows.

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

Greenbacks all the way. Can't beat 4 greenbacks being pushed hard for that big old fuzz sound.

EV has recently started making guitar speakers again. the zakk wylde 'signature' evm and a reissue of the emv12L.

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

Do you want two Crate "special design" 12's for free? Just pay shipping. You could try them in a X pattern and see if that solves your problem?

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

drew half empty squares by those Eminence Wizards. I love vintage 30's but i dunno how they'd react with your rig.

just remember that with stoner rock it's more important to have LOTS of speakers than a few good ones. and Josh Homme used to play guitar thru an Ampeg V4 into an 8x10 fridge cab.

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

For a good deal, there is always the Emi Swamp Thang. I'v got a 2x12 vertical recto, with a EVM12L in the top, and a Swamp Thang in the bottom. The EV has a crapload more top end projection.
