Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

NOOO not greenbacks. That aint Stoner/Doom!

getcha a 2x15 cabinet loaded with some masive ev's or some thing. Greenbacsk are classic rock, stoner is a reinterpretation of 70's heavey metal, no?

Stoner? Greenbacks, driven hard. 4x12" cab. Old '70s British tube amp. Treble booster.

Anything that Tony Iommy did that time is stoner / doom and it means an old Laney amp + treble boost through old Laney cabs. Laney used various speakers at the time, I have seen lots of Goodmans speakers and Celestion Greenbacks inside among others. My old KLIPP cab has Greenbacks. No replacement or whatsoever, it's pretty much the original factory set of crunchers.

Kind of, but it's pretty amp-dependent. You would be really surprised if you could hear me playing through them :) Greenbacks are old-school all-round speakers with some exceptionally nice and organic woody feel to them that is extremely compatible with them '60s-'70s British tube amps. Any Selmer, Laney, VOX will shine through them. Nice crunch when driven hard. It's really easy to fry them, anyway.

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

i didn't know that the delta pro was a copy of the EVM!!! very nice!!! i'll definately look into that. SO MANY CHOICES!

I had an EVM 12L. Good speaker, but not my first choice for stoner. It has plenty of clarity, but is also a little stiff/bright sounding for my tastes.

Myself, I like Vintage 30s. It's not everyone's taste, but it's hard to go wrong with them. Same goes for the G12H-30. There's two versions however....one was originally meant for guitar and one for bass. The one with the lower frequency response is the bass version. It's also the one you want if you want to go that route.

If you want to go cheaper the Eminence Wizard is the G12H-30. I forget which is the V30 (someone could probably chip in here). The Man-O-War is the G12T-75.

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

for what it's worth, Electric Amps uses Eminence Man O' Wars in their guitar cabs. and i don't know if you can get much more stoner rock than Electric Amps.

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

i was impressed by the thickness and low end of those Emi Swamp thing speakers. I'd suggest maybe a mix of those and another set of 2 Emis that have a more midrange/high end texture.

Yup, that's why I think the EVM12L/Swamp Thang mix is a natural. The EV by itself has plenty of everything by itself (if you like the flavor), and the The Swamp Thang adds a lot of broadrange "floor". Both of them are 100% American-style tone. Both of are stiff (sterile ?) enough to be used in both open or closed back cabs.

From what I remember, the EV is rated @ 100dB/Watt, and the Swamp Thang is rated at 102dB/Watt (in the 8 ohm model), not that sheer efficiency alone should be the most important goal.

I could definitely see other people using the Swampy for the bottom, and a choice of a brighter speaker for the top.

i think i'm gonna try this out. i do remember hearing a EVM12L and going...holy crap this sounds good.

but i'm still pondering the greenback! ugh!

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

IMO, Stoner rock was about the least gear specific music out there. I like it that way.

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

the g1275s in there right now are like a pocket knife going in a vag as opposed to the proper cylindrical man tool.
I've had a pair of those, and your description is bang on. I hated the things. Gave them to a buddy who had a 4x12" with four of them in it and one of them blown.

this is true. as someone already said i believe, it's more about having a large number of speakers and amps than having the "right" ones for the job.

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

Okay how about this: I have a Mesa Retifier Cab with 4 V30s in it but I would like to warm it up a bit and round out the sound a bit . . . would i get that effect from maybe swapping out two of the V30s for two Greenbacks, in a criss crossed pattern

lol. you're not a very nice guy. a curse in disguise.

j/k. but yeah...they suck

Re: Speakers for a good stoner/rock sound

I'm staring at a Matamp quad with 4 G12H30s as I type. That's a pretty cool sounding cab, but overall I'd prefer greenbacks if I was going for stereotypical stoner.
