Speakers for a Hiwatt head

Re: Speakers for a Hiwatt head

I would think EVMs would deliver all the goods a Hi-Watt has to offer.

(Get a dolly, or hire a really strong, really stupid roadie to move it.)

Re: Speakers for a Hiwatt head

the secret to the celestions is they are generally lower in efficiency than other makes. this allows you to push your amp a bit harder without being as loud as a higher efficiency speaker.

the H speakers have a much bigger magnet (ceramic) than their other speakers so it makes for a tight and "undistortable" tone.

Re: Speakers for a Hiwatt head

I gigged my Hiwatt for several years in the 90s with a 4x12 that had a hodgepodge of speakers. I think that my od pedal sort of evened it all out for a great rock tone. Later, I used a GB loaded 4x12, and a V30 loaded 4x12. Did a few gigs with each of those cabs too.

I'd say that the V30 loaded cab did the best job for the Hiwatt sound that I seem to like. When I downsized to a 2x12, I used V30s again, as a result of the earlier experiences.

I did try Tonkers because I heard that they were similar to the old Fanes. I did not like them at all. Maybe I just don't like Fanes? But, then again, I was not necessarily going for the Live At Leeds sound...YMMV...good luck on the search!
