Speakers for the Bogner Shiva

I posted this on the Gear Page as well...

I use a Bogner Shiva EL34 model. I use the amp for both it's clean and gain. Currently I own a Mojave 4x12 G12H30 cab. I do not feel this speaker set up favors the Shiva. I am trying to decide what to do.

I am wondering if one shouldn't use a MIXED speaker setup with a Shiva (re: X Pattern) or all one speaker type? Any new and creative ideas? Golds? 65s? V30s & 80s or 75's?

Do I keep the mojave and change the speakers OR get a Bogner cab? Bogner makes some killer cabs!

I like classic tones up to hard rock type gain a la Hendrix, Beck, Trower, Gilmour, Santana, ****ey Betts, Matchless and Marshall type amps.

Any ideas?

Re: Speakers for the Bogner Shiva

I think GJ has been thru this enough for all of us. It really sounds like if you want your Bogner to sound it's best, it needs a Bogner cab. It also sounds like the 4x12 is the way to go.

I do believe that some equipment sounds better mated with the head/cab it was intended to go with. Expecially with such high end equipment, I'd go Bogner cab.

As for speakers, Jonsey swears by the V30's. Those are just a hair too smooth for my taste. My latest dream cab has an x pattern of greenbacks and g12H30's. Or my G12T-75's and the G12H's. You may have to play with a few combinations to get what you want, but luckily speakers are fairly cheap these days.

Mojave's 4x12 with G12H's is tuned to be much like the late 60's basket weave Marshall 4x12's. So it seems odd that it's not giving the vibe of the artists you list? Also, G12H speakers already give about the nicest compromize between crunch and smoothness. I'm thinking maybe it's not the speakers or the cab, but the head may be just too modern sounding and too high of gain. You might actually like a Mojave 45 head w/ tube rectification better for this more classic Marshall/Matchless vibe that your looking for.

Re: Speakers for the Bogner Shiva

Well, the head is a little gain-y for the speakers. V30s smooth it out, while the G12H30s with the gain past noon become verrry crunchy.

When I first tried a Shiva it was at Moderate volume thru Greenbacks and I was floored. I am thinking a G12H and Green mix could be hot, BUT I am afraid of mushing out at higher volumes. I have such limited, although VERY positive, experienced with Greens. I played some loud gigs with one Marshall cab with greens and was wow-ed.

I like the sound quite well WITH my FX incl a BBE and a TC G Major - then it really shines. I am thinking of keeping the cab and just mixing in V30s.

I have been verrrry curious about Celestion Golds. I heard them with a Clubman at the Amp Show, but I would love to hear a Bogner with Blues or Golds.

I have heard some interesting reviews of 65's but I have rarely encountered 65's around town.

Well everyone's afraid of the GB's mushing out under gain, but they don't really do that in a closed back 4x12 cab. GB's have more "bark" to the pick attack than V30's.

65's were pretty common back in the 80's and they have similar basic voice to the GB. 65's stay crisper, even in a open back cab, and have later milder breakup, but they still breakup eventually.
