Speakers wired in series Vs in parallel

Guys what do you use and why?

Is there any difference at all?

I am refering to a 2x12 cab btw.

I know that the impedances have to match etc, but is there any difference sound-wise?

Thanks

series tends to sound fatter in the mids to my ears

Re: Speakers wired in series Vs in parallel

If you have a tube power amp, there will be a difference if the resulting impedance is different.

Unlike solid state power transistors which produce the same EQ independently of load (but of course low load causes more power and hence more heat), the power tubes act differently depending on the balance they are in. Different impedance of the speaker cabinets cause different load on the end state transformer and that changes the balance the power tubes are in, which react not only with power but also with sound changes.

There will be no difference in what the amp puts out for similar impedance, e.g. 2x 16 Ohm parallel versus 2x 4 Ohm in series. Of course the different Ohm speaker models might sound different.

There might be a slight difference in tone that some can notice and some cannot. I think the overall tone might be a little thicker and less sharp when speakers are wired in series. Vox AC30's are typically wired with the two 12's in series I believe.

Re: Speakers wired in series Vs in parallel

I don't hear a ton of a difference with series/parallel wiring. But, I do like how if one speakers blows in parallel, the amp will see at least some load from the remaining speaker.

What if you compare two 4 ohms in series to two 16 ohms in parallel?

I remember when I was into car audio and subs, there was a slight posibbility of phase issues when speakers were wired in series. I can't remember the specifics, and maybe the frequencies that guitar drivers deal with don't expierence the same issue.

That's exactly why I prefer parallel - great post!

I'm also the kinda guy that refuses to use mismatched cabinets with amp heads. The idea is to play it safe and work with what you know works without any possible complications :)

Re: Speakers wired in series Vs in parallel

I have a cab with a series/par switch, so I can run all my heads through it. I hear a difference. Par feels tighter, more focused and provides a slightly more even note response. Series is a little more open and jangly. A slightly more raw feel to my ears. I like series better, but not by much. My bassman and Garnet heads are fixed at 4 ohm, and I do love those heads with that cab.

So there is a slight difference, that's interesting. Thanks alot for sharing your experience once more guys!
