Speakers?

OK, so I feel like a total retard. I've had a YCV20 for like 5 years, and everyone said "change out the tubes and the speaker, it's amazing". Well, I did the tubes a few years back, and I finally put a Vintage 30 in it.....and I feel like I have a new amp! I can't believe I waited this long, if I had known it'd sound that much better I'd have done it the week after I bought the stupid amp....

So, that being said, what's your favorite speaker (out of curiosity)?

I put a Vintage 30 in just 'cause everybody said it was good, and I figured it'd be a good place to start. A friend of mine had a Tonker in his YCV40 because he wanted a really good clean tone (he plays rockabilly) Another friend had a Alltone in his Hot Rod but that's been discontinued. Thoughts, anyone?

Re: Speakers?

It's nearly unanimous that the "best all-around rock speaker" is the V30. There are other speakers to go to for other reasons, but for value and tone for the masses, no one beats the V30. Polls among guitarists here and elsewhere for many years have substantiated this claim over and over again.

Yep. I've only heard good things about the V30.

OP: Thanks for your post. I've been putting off doing the same for a while now... your post just re-assures me that it should be done and done soon!

Re: Speakers?

The V30 is a good all round speaker, but in a combo the bass might be lacking for some people.

The G12H30 does really well in combos, but sometimes you run into the wattage issue.

Re: Speakers?

the celestion alnico blue is my all time favorite speaker but it only handles 15w and costs $250 each.

i really like the g12h and the g12m both are great sounding with different characteristics. a new favorite is the cannabis rex by eminence, a nice fat american toned speaker

How would you describe the characteristics of the G12H and G12M?

The G12H has a lower midrange growl and a rounded top end.

The G12M has a woody textured sound with a more present top end

The cones are the same 75Hz cones unless you get the Heritage G12H30. IIRC the dustcap is bigger on the H30s.

Hope that helps.

Re: Speakers?

The Eminence Wizard and The V30 are prob the most amazing speakers I've ever heard...

The Wizard is amazing!!!

Re: Speakers?

I've had a YCV40 with a marshall labeled V30 in it for a couple years now and just recently picked up a brand new V30 clone for $21 bucks off of Ebay called "Warehouse Speakers" I think. It supposedly got the same cone from the same factory as Celestion used in the V30 with a copy basket and magnet. Well It doesn't sound that much like my V30 but it does sound great! It's got a flatter response and deeper bass but not as tight. I put it in my YCV40 on the way to my Hot Rod Deluxe but I don't want to take it out now. The amp sounds fantastic. I won't know for sure till I switch back but I may actually like it better than the V30 for that amp. It's not my favorite speaker, but for 20 bucks....

Actually I'd like it for $50 too.

Oh yeah, and it's LOUD too. Much louder than the V30.

Wizard... that's what I'm gonna put in my little Fender BJ combo when I find the time/cash.

Anyway, my favorite speaker...
