speakers

I gonna get some new speakers in my 2-12 cab- using it with my 50 watt marshall heads. I'm looking for a crunchy classic rock tone. i've been thinking of alnico speakers, such as celestion blues, webers, emminence, or tone tubbys, maybe fanes. Anyone have any ideas or experience with any of these?
Thanks

Re: speakers

FANE AXA.12!!!!!! Speaker is amazing! My absolute favorite for classic rock. Gives the Marshall more agression and a tighter bass. Webers are amazing too, but I don't have any experience with the more british models they have (the blue dog and the silver bell), but I heard great things. The blue dogs are clones of the celestion blues. You cant go with the celestion blues becasuse they are only 15 watts a piece and youll blow em out with a 50 watt marshall. Id definitely spend the money on the Fanes. A little expensive, but they really really good. You can get them at loudspeakersplus.com.

Re: speakers

I used to use a hiwatt cab that had 4 25watt fanes, and that thing sounded incredible, so I've always been interested in those. I'm gonna see what I can find.

Re: speakers

I have Eminence speakers in my cabs. I am really impressed with the sound and the quality of these things. Additionally, they have so many models to choose from. The Fane speakers I've heard seem to be of excellent quality, but the sound was slightly sterile to me. It may have been because they were not broken in yet, but it was a lot different from my Eminence Legends.

Re: speakers

I've definitely noticed speakers change in tone as they get broken in- they just get smoother and more natural, I guess. I'd like to try the fanes, but they're REALLy expensive.

Re: speakers

The Eminence Redcoat series would fit the bill IMO. I own a Private Jack and it does the classic crunch thing just right. I would look into the Governor and Wizard.

Re: speakers

Man, those emminence sound like they're great, but there are so many that its daunting to even start trying to choose. Doesn't Krank use those in their cabs?
I wish it was easier to try these things out (same with pups). Sound clips don't seem to help a whole lot, considering all the elements involved in tone- amp, guitar, pups, fingers

If you want something more akin to an alnico but sticking to a less expensive ceramic, the the Celestion Vintage 30 (It's Eminence eqivilant is the Governer) is hard to beat. The V30 was designed to emulate the cone movements of their early alnico G12's.

You hear all kinds of things about the V30, such as they are too bright and harsh, especially open backed. After awhile I started believing what I was reading instead of trusting my ears, and wondering if my hearing was damaged or something? But when you can A-B the speakers to many others; the V30's are among the warmest and sweetest. The mids are strong and thick, so maybe thats what these people are precieving as bright? My v30's are well broken in by now having been played for years and years, so maybe it's that, but there are not too bright and harsh to my ears.

Yes, they are very harsh when not broken in. Just like lotsa speakers. I get them as Hellatones from Avatar and he's already broken them in so they sound sweet right out of the box. Plus their way, way cheaper from Dave as well. Like many others, my favorite speaker mixture is the V30/G12H30. For me it works great for most metal and rock.

Re: speakers

I gut a great deal on some Vintage 30's so I'll let y'all know how it pans out. Thanks for all the advice ya'll.
