Speakers

I have seen discussions of speakers off and on in different threads, but maybe we could consolidate the discussion into something vault worthy.

What are your favorite speakers? Why?

What tones does the speaker excel at producing?

Specs?

Feel free to add any other information.

Maybe it would be nice to have comparisons/contrasts as well. Which speakers by different manufacturers are similar?

Re: Speakers

I love the combo of a G12h30 and G12M Greenback for the warmth, slight breakup and classic tones.

Re: Speakers

For Marshalls, I love the G12H30s (tried them in the 2061CX 2x12 cab with a DSL, 1987X and a 2061X) - was having way too much fun in the soundproof room in guitar center with a 56 Strat one day. Those speakers really kick some serious ass! Greenback vibe with those chimey cleans yet have a powerful low end. And of course, nice and creamy with complex mids when taken up for overdrive. I prefer these to the G12Ms because I feel that they have nicer cleans.

For anything else I like Weber Alnico Jensen copies. Even though Im not too experienced, the experience Ive had with them is great. I like the rich tones I can get out of them, especially with tweed amps. I tried alnico speakers in blackface amps too and liked it much better than their ceramic counterparts.

Re: Speakers

I like V30's mixed with the G12H's in my 2x12 cabs. They seem to fill in each others voids well and give a nice character to the overall sound. Mind you, I'm using mine ì

Re: Speakers

i wanna try a classic lead 80 but too worried i won't get "crunch" like other celestions, and worried it will cut too much highs. I wanna try a g12h30 but i'm worried it will be too smooth and not enough "edge" or "crunch" and be too smooth and not enough high end. I don't like v30's they have weird bass, and the midrange sound makes my stomach churn. Kind of a dull sounding speaker compared to the speakers i use.

Re: Speakers

I think I'm going to take two of the 75's out of my 4x12 and put in two greenbacks, to get some of that early breakup and smooth tone.

Re: Speakers

i played a friends 2x12 cab (home made) with tone tubbies .. one was the ceramic and one was alnico ... that combination was really very cool for soloing .. nothing nasal or spikey or woofy .. just very warm ... we were REALLY loud, though

i am partial to the evm-12L from electrovoice ... the old ones were really incredible ... i havent heard the reissues yet, but have heard tell that they are worthy of the name indeed

Re: Speakers

I use a Jensen 15" for my AC-15 clone, great "slow" speaker, plus you get alot of sound at a good low level, as the amp is having a harder time pushing the bigger speaker, I also use the 15" Jensen along with an openback 12" Jensen on a 50 watts EL-34 combo, gives a great earthy sound at low to higher levels.
Celestions...I like Greenbacks from 20 to 30 watts:) Preferly in closed cabs, V-30's and G12H's, those I like both in open and closed cabs, got 4 Classic Lead 80's that I need to stuff in a cab, guess I have to get another 4x12 cab:D
More Jensen, I really love their 10" speakers, both closed and open backs:)
A very sweet and great speaker, but I like them best in quads:D

Re: Speakers

I haven't really tried enough to know for sure what my "favorites" are. Gets too expensive swappin 'em in a 4X12.

Though, for the time being, I really like the eminence governor/Man-o-war combo in my mesa cab for heavy tones. The cleans do leave somthing to be desired however.

Can't go wrong with Vintage 30's, they are a little too hot in the high end for me though. Got better cleans with those than my current setup...eh, ya win some and ya lose some.

Re: Speakers

I think the Eminence Legend V12's are the most versatile speakers around right now. They have the characterisics of V30's but the EQ is a bit more balanced with the low end enhanced. Work extremely well on clean or high gain settings, plus they are about 1/3 the price of a V30.

Re: Speakers

I like the sparkling cleans that you get with V30s . . . they sound better in a closed back cab than an openback combo though . . .

Re: Speakers

Pretty big topic...depends on the amp, the style of music, etc etc etc...I use everything from old D130F's to Heppner organ pulls depending on what I want.

Re: Speakers

I like guitar speakers that are not too clean. It needs two or three things:

1) Some complex or thick harmonic content, even with the amp run fairly clean.

2) Good mids, I detest speakers with empty mids.

3) Sound good under distortion.

This means that I like V30's, 30 watt greenbacks, and alnicos for the most part.

Re: Speakers

I like 25w greenbacks for classic hard rock with closed back cabinets. Nice fat midrange response.
Runners up: G12h30, Weber Blue Dog ceramic

I like the JBL d120f for Fender-ish tone with open back cabinets. Very nice for glassy tone with tight bottom end and smooth midrange.
Runners up: Jensen C12n and similar Weber F150

Re: Speakers

The one cab that I have tried that makes everything sound better is the Peavey Classic 412. It has 4 Sheffield 1230 speakers. I used one when I worked in a store as the constant for a customer who was looking for a head. Everything we plugged into is sounded better than with it's "proper" cab. We tested the following: Marshall TSL60, TSL100 and Mode Four, and Peavey XXX, JSX, 5150, and 5150 II.

This cab actually made the Mode Four sound musical. I was blown away.

The 1230 is kind of similar to V30's, but nicer break-up and very smooth with just enough of a mid-spike to really cut through.

I also put the 2 Eminence speakers from my Line6 AX2 into a 4x12 diagonally along with a 1230 and whatever the stock thing is in my cabinet and for recording, I managed to get 2 totally different tones, leaving the amp settings the same and moving my mic from the 1230 to the Eminence...

The Eminence had a nice flat response that seemed to perfectly replicate the tone of the signal chain. Line 6 was right in their description of the speaker...
