Speaking of Zephyrs...

Anyone has custom ordered something cool with the Zephyr wire? I remember Keith Merrow had some Zephyr Nazgul/Sentient pups. Anyone got anything like that? A cool Zephyr JB? Hell, is anyone rocking the plain old Zephyrs? Thoughts?

ive played zephyr buckers and strat pups, but i dont own any. bit rich for me.

Well, let's be honest. You can spend > $800 on regular PAF clones per pair. From there it isn't such a massive steo top $1300 or whatever the Zephyrs did cost.

Thoughts only.
If playing was my day gig, I would likely test a set. Especially if I was doing serious studio work.
As playing is not my day gig, my expectation is I would spend a lot of money for pickups that accurately reproduced every flaw in my playing.
Not even 24 hours on this thread yet and I already see some experienced, and well respected musicians, not having an application for them.
Likely not a lot of them out there in action.

They were probably just a proof of concept as much as anything.

I'll take aluminum over silver any day

I can't find an actual sales page, just the "concept page". Price is mentioned nowhere that I can see.

From their general description, what they would provide isn't really anything I look for in a pickup. I generally go for warm, buttery sounds.

No, and you're not likely to find many here that have direct experience with them.

The few reviews I've come across over the years typically suggested that, while they are very clear and dynamic, they are not all that different from a premium set of pickups using standard copper wire. Cool as a novelty item, but not really groundbreaking in a functional/tonal sense.

Keith Merrow has worked with Duncan on quite a few things over the years, so his set was likely just a "thank you" gesture...something unusual and fun to try. Personally, if I was having a set of custom Zephyrs made, I'd go full Parallel Axis!

Wow, good to know! I wonder what the hold up is with the PA designs? Hmm...

It seems your experience with the Zephyr JB/Jazz is pretty much in line with the other accounts I've come across. Cool, but so far beyond the point of diminishing returns that the price is hard to justify outside of bragging rights, as you suggested.

they can't do parallel axis zephyrized bobbins. already asked.

I have a set of JB/jazz zephyrs. They are very good. but are they worth a grand? No. The Concept set is just as good. it's more a case of bragging rights than anything else.
that is badass. the buckers i tried were the normal ones, i liked the neck a lot, bridge was ok
