Re: Special Les Pauls Day....

I know somebody who has his brother's '68/69 LP on long term loan. Same wide/ugly brown 'burst. Slightly clunky neck pitch angle. Looks frightful. Sounds great.

Re: Special Les Pauls Day....

That 68 is not a 68 and definitely not a custom

That looks like a mij guitar worked over...or a mid 70s deluxe worked over, though the rim burst is not something they did in the 70s..it would be a hard edge tear drop...

In 68 there would be no standards except p90s. They were special order guitars, and.not until 74 were humbucker standards made on a production basis.

Edit- neck pickup definitely looks routed.

My point- hope you don't pay much for it.

Oh! Bloody hell, I couldn't afford a 6k guitar!
Just browsing around today.

Re: Special Les Pauls Day....

I definitely wouldn't pay $6K for that even if I had the funds.

As JeffB pointed out, the best case scenario is that it's a custom color P-90 guitar from '68 that's been routed for humbuckers and had the bridge, tail piece, truss rod cover, and tuners swapped.

The logo is correct for the period, and the silkscreen over the finish appears to have worn off. Am I the only one who thinks the headstock is too long and narrow? Seeing the back would answer a few more questions, but the price seems high for what they have.

Re: Special Les Pauls Day....

Are they really asking almost 1K for "The Paul"? I remember seeing those for about 1/3 of that a few years ago... Wait long enough and anything will be a "valuable collectors item", right? THey do sound OK but the coulple I handled were suprisingly heavy (walnut)
I also wanna know what's going on with the "68" bridge and tailpiece.
Thanks for sharing, it's always fun to see what's out there.

Re: Special Les Pauls Day....

I can believe that that is a '68 Les Paul. The headstock, frets, and binding look right (as do the knobs, though easily replaceable parts like that mean little). However, it has to have been refinished (poorly, I might add), and had the original P90 routs routed out. Sunbursts and humbuckers did not come on '68 Pauls unless by special order (very rare). Additionally, very few of the other parts are original. The original tuners, nut, truss rod cover, bridge, tailpiece, pickups are all gone, and not only near impossible to replace, but not worth the money even if you could find the right parts. There also might have been some difficult to repair work done to mount that godawful bridge.

The best bet for that guitar is to have a professional restorer completely strip the top, replace the missing wood, and restore the original gold top finish, fake-aged to match the rest of the guitar. Load it up with Antiquity P90's and "distressed" hardware, including new double-ring tuners. Even then, you're talking about something worth $2,000, TOPS. As it is, it's a $1,500 guitar TOPS, only to someone who really wanted a '68 and could do most of the restoration him or herself. If it played well (i.e. didn't need new frets), I'd pay that for it, since I have a '68 SG Std., a '68 ES-330, a '68 Guild F50, and a '68 Princeton Reverb. I've always wanted a '68 Lester to add to the list. $1,500 is high, but I would pay it for those reasons (I really want a '68 and I can do the work myself). $6,000 is an absolute joke, though. The shop owner is probably just ignorant of what makes a guitar like that worth money, and priced it as if it was an all original example that he saw sell on E-Bay or sumthin'. Sadly, it's likely gonna just sit there and rot for who know how long. Kinda sad to see, as I'd love to tackle the project, at a reasonable price.

Re: Special Les Pauls Day....

yEAH, wondering about that freaky bridge.. As far as pricing, alot of pawn shops Ive gone to greatly over price stuff. One in jax a few years ago was trying to sell Ibanez Gios for like 300-400. I told em they were nuts with their pricing. They said well, this is what our info shows they go for. I took them a musicians friend catalog.. next time I went in, things were more realistic...

Of course, I know too, they are looking for an uninformed sucker..
