speed? how do i get as fast as vai? please help!

shred me good

New member
this is realy a big q that iv seen asked on here before, but my q is slightly diferent.

i would like to be able to improvise in a speedy fation, i can already do such speedy tecniques such as taping etc but this is still fairly limiting.

i was wondering if anyone has any tips such as sweep picking or tremolo picking etc? and how these teckniques cold be employed in an improvised solo?
thanks very much

practise practise practise.

also, lessons with a real person (not video's) might help

Re: speed? how do i get as fast as vai? please help!

Definitely practice practice and more practice, but lessons with a real person that you are paying for give you that extra incentive to learn whatever it is they teach you. So that works much better than self teaching i think...much faster anyway.

practice slowly with a metronome.

Re: speed? how do i get as fast as vai? please help!

You all forgot natural talent..........

Re: speed? how do i get as fast as vai? please help!

Some people can run fast, some people have fast fingers.
Vai might have naturally fast fingers.

Re: speed? how do i get as fast as vai? please help!

Your metronome should be your best friend. Most of all, you need a lot of patience. Moving your fingers really fast across the fretboard is simple, but the key is ACCURACY. You wanna have every note crystal clear before you start upping the tempo. John Petrucci's "Rock Discipline" is a pretty decent video with a lot of practice licks for you to work on.

As for the improvisation, an instructor will do wonders. My teacher has yet to scratch the surface with me and I'm seeing so many doors open with my playing. I'm a lot more confident.

You'll only get there the same way as Carnegie Hall: PRACTICE!

Find a teacher that understands the genre you're trying to play in, and then bleed him or her dry!

Natural talent helps, but it can easily be made up for with lots of hard work. Look at Paul Gilbert! He'll tell you that he used to suck. :laugh2:

Re: speed? how do i get as fast as vai? please help!

Off topic, but MRID, The feel I get from Gilbert's playing is more of the worked his ass off for it, than the God given or natural talent feel I get from Satch, Petrucci, and Vai. Just my .02$

Re: speed? how do i get as fast as vai? please help!

Yeah, but you have people that wanna LOOK cool playing (you know, playin super fast licks ala Malmsteen), and then you have people that want to sound real cool through melody ala Satch.
Personally I would rather be the former (looking cool) simply because I like the sound of a guitarist just...shredding (playing right notes of course, but shredding), so if you're like me, you don't need a God given talent for music, you just have to know what you want and go for it.
If that made no sense, I completely understand...!

Re: speed? how do i get as fast as vai? please help!

Ha ha i hear ya... Personally i'd prefer the latter satch...

practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice.

in the words of the great Ace frehley:

"practice 'til those fingers bleed..... then practice some more"

This is just my opinion, but I only believe your statement was true when he was in Racer X... he wrote much more melodically when he was in the band Mr. Big. Mr. Big wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but there definetely was melody in his guitar playing there...

mr. big rocks!!

addicted to that ruch and colorado bulldog are some of my favorite tunes!

Re: speed? how do i get as fast as vai? please help!

Point taken...I've never listened to Mr. Big, only Racer X. I get the whole "practiced there ass off" feeling from Michael Angelo, Yngwie Malmsteen, and a lot of other just plain shredders.

Don't listen to them much, but the stuff I've heard is great. I really like "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind"
