Speed knobs or Tophats?

Not to sound too pretentious, but I am proficient enough at my instrument that the shape of knob doesn't effect my performance.

I pick whichever one looks coolest

Not that I doubt your talent, but really...that's like saying you're proficient enough at walking that it doesn't matter whether you're on a 20' wide street or a 1/4" wide irregular beam.

I've been playing for 65 years and find that some knobs definitely affect my ability to "work" my instrument.

I most certainly must not be as good as you.

Skulls for the win!

Skull knobs...been there, done that. Look cool on some guitars, but form definitely does NOT follow function (the most important feature of a guitar).

They are next to impossible to get smooth volume or tone adjustments.

Yeah, Strat knobs are impossible to grab and pull quickly. The S1 switch is a gamechanger, but man, it is expensive for what it is.

I have a push-pull phase on the Custom Lite with speed knobs and I have no issues using it intra-song. The Fender I will pull out the know before the tune so I do not need to fumble with it.

My Les Paul came with top hats, they're fine. I like Strat knobs, they work for me. Tele knurled knobs are good too. In other words, I'm not too picky. I don't go for the fancy abalone inlay and such knobs though. Basic plastic or metal is fine for me.

The Les Paul has push/pull volume to split and the top hats are fine. No issues. I don't usually split on the fly anyway.

Speed knobs I can easily grab. Top hats and Strat knobs, not so much. Still, push/push is a more ergonomic idea, even if the mechanism is more fragile.

my absolute favorite knobs are the callaham knurled tele knobs. the are almost stabby, but so damn good
