Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

Empty Pockets

this is more than likely 100% my fault but ahhh the connector for the 9 volt battery on my DS-1 is split in half. Would a drip of solder and some electrical tape suffice to put it back together, or should i send this to somebody who knows things about stuff?

No. ;)

Yes.

As cheap and easy a repair this would be, you should do it right. I'd be happy to do it for free if you cover shipping, but there must be someone closer to you that could handle this.

Re: Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

So let me get this straight, you think that a split wire cannot be soldered back together? Are you kidding me? That's like saying that it's impossible to replace a pickup without taking your guitar to a tech . . .

I agree with Artie.......No reason to "jury rig" a part that is very inexpensive. The battery connectors in those stompers are pretty cheaply made and can be upgraded to one that is sturdy on the cheap. :)

Re: Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

FWIW...your thread title makes it sound like there was a problem due to the work of the guy who did the modification. But, it's a problem with the pedal that's not related to Mr. Spina's work.

That was a very kind offer from Artiee to fix it for you. Although I'm sure you could handle it EP. Give it a shot.

Hey Steve; I got the impression from his post that the little plastic connector was broken in half. That you can't fix properly, when a new one is like 57 cents. Also . . . you never fix anything with a "drip of solder".

No offense taken, however. ;)

Re: Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

Ah, that would make sense then. I thought you were advocating someone sending their pedal away to fix a broken wire!

You're also more than welcome to send it back to me and I'll fix it for free...

I don't get pedals back with problems and I've only had like 3 that had problems,so it's no big deal....It scares me to see my name on the post topics though, and I prefer a PM over that, but it's no big deal....My offer still stands....I'll fix if for free for you!

Re: Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

Ya can't beat that. That's a good man right there.

Thanks Jolly.....I don't charge alot of money to mod a forum member's pedal, but I always stand behind it,and I'll fix it for free if it quits working...Providing a guy doesn't tamper with it or drop it off a 6 story building or something! :laugh2:

Re: Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

What a great bunch of guys we have here.

This is the BEST place on the 'net.

Re: Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

I'm glad I got all my Spina mods before he went on sabbatical.

I've been going through my pedals lately to weed them out. This thread reminded me to pull out one of the SD-1s John did, and again, it sounds freakin' great!!!!!

I'm gonna pull out one of the DS-1s too --- those sound great with a tele, the SD-1s to me like strats a little more.

my first thought after playing the SD-1 again was, "I don't need no stinkin' boutiqe OD!"
Plus, they have a cool stealth feature:
"What's that pedal you're using?"
"Just a little Boss." :D :D

if any of you get the chance, and if John gets the time and inclination to do mods again, then please jump on it!

a great OD with custom high grade mods tuned by ear for <$100 is a no brainer :)

Curly I did a poll recently asking if forum members wanted me to start doing the pedal mods again....Everyone wanted me to.Funny thing is,I've not received 1 PM about modding a pedal for someone>I'm ok either way,but if a guy wants a pedal modded, they just need to contact me.:laugh2:

Re: Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

Haha sorry I didn't mean to even come close to makin Mr. Spina look bad -- i've got nothin but good things to say about him. I was just infering that it was a modded DS-1 so nobody told me to just send it back to the factory...

Anyway it's still broken in half but today I managed to get it working, although it would cut out and stuff...I'm gonna be snapping a lot of photos of guitar-related stuff in about ten minutes here so I'm gonna show you guys the problem and then you guys can just tell me what you'd do...if it's not something I wanna attempt i'll send it out and probably put some candy in the box or somethin :D

And I've got a +8,000 about this forum having the coolest people on it. I'm not really the type of dude to sit around and nit-pick over which humbucker's the best or anything, but I still feel comfortable and 'at home' around this group. I've been coming here since I couldn't decide if I wanted a Fender Strat or an Epiphone SG back when I was 15 :D memories...

I still get compliments on my Spina JCM 800 in a box. No one can believe it started life as a DS-1.

Re: Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

I say replace it.

Good point since you can get a brand new one for $40 all day long and a used one for less than that! Send it to me and I'll mod it again for you....

Makes sense,so you don't have a pedal that works only sometimes or not at all.:fingersx:

Re: Spina-modded DS-1 problems....SAY IT AIN'T SO

replace the whole thing? i dunno about that. i'd rather just try to get this one working again and if i can't.......i dunno, get a Metal Muff or something. Cheap as a new DS-1 would be, by the time i factor in shipping and another Spina session i could've tried an exciting new pedal...

p.s. next post should have those pix
