Ok took some of your advice and put the mic off-axis and even nipped the treble and presence a bit more. Now, for some reason, it sounds a bit "muffled" to my untrained, amateur ear.

Anyway, I really appreciate all the input...

That sounds much better! That actually really reminds me of the way my head (Morris Custom 50 Watt) sounds when you really crank it.

Which amp is that exactly that you had modded?

I woulda gotten that quick rod of yours CRAIG, if I had the money =)

but still, I did buy a tube amp recently, and I'm VERY pleased with how damn good it sounds..when we record our demo next friday I'll be sure to post a clip to show ya how it sounds...

Which amp is that exactly that you had modded?

Marshall 1959 RI. Pre-effects loop. Scott says the trannys in these were pretty good stock and don't really need to be upgraded. Traded a tele for the thing and had him send it directly to NC. Did the 3 channel mod (OD1/OD2/clean). I wish I could've heard the amp before the mod to compare. But shipping can be expensive...

It's pretty amazing how much difference moving the mic an inch or two makes...thanks for the feedback!

ah, I thought so. I think the 1959 SLP RI w/Splawn mod is just amazing. I may have to get one of those too for a backup. Man it sounds killer.

I also ordered one (yes, that is correct) groove toob 12ax7m..someone elsewhere on the boards suggested puting it in the 'v5' position..so Ifigured what the hell...one tube doesn't cost that much...and if one's enough to get even better tone, why order more so we'll see....even *I* can change a pre amp tube..lol

I love groove tubes. My ADA MP-1 and 5150 are both loaded with them. They always sounded great to me. My Splawn has the Mullards in it right now. they sound greta, not as hot as a Groove I think. I may change them here in the next month or so.

actually the 12ax7-m is the mullard remake =D so who knows? if I like the sound with just changing the one, I might have to replace all the preamp tubes with them..hehe..

and yeah, I saw that pic..definetly a sweet amp...I still listen to 'splawn blues' from time to time..LOVE that tone..

as an aside, I'm probably going to be swapping out the pups on my axis soon and have a friend help me set it up...I think I'm going to go with the JB and a Jazz
