I've been jonesing for a Splawn for some time and pulled the trigger after one came up on Ebay here in the UK. They're as rare as hens teeth over here so, I jumped at the chance. I gave a review on the earlier Splawn thread, so here's some pics.......

That's just Secksay. I love white, but with two little children mine wouldn't've stayed white for long.

Awesome!

Wow... what's the question? I wanna win it! You did say it was a Splawn Competition! Are you just teasing with this?

Seriously, that looks just superb... if it sounds as good as it looks it'll be awesome. Can I ask how much you got that for? I too am in the U.K and have never seen one over here. What sort of sound do you get and how good is the solo function? I love white amps.. wish I'd have covered my Cornford in white now instead of black! Good luck with that one bud, very, very... VERY nice!

Thanks mate! I got this for £800 (importing one new would be around £1100). The previous owner - JammerMatt will know him from the Splawn forum(James Healey) - imported it in January this year. Sound wise, here's my earlier initial review:-

Ok, picked my Competition on Monday and because of work ain't had a chance to really try it until today. I ain't got my 4x12's at hand at the mo' so just had to run through my Engl ported 1x12 with V30.

All I can say is WOW!!!!!! This thing is pure hot rod Marshall to the bone - great tones with minimal tweaking and even just running through a 1x12, this baby roared like a lion. I ran my Intellifex in the loop for a touch of reverb and delay and also to attenuate the amp a bit using the output control. I had gain at 12 o'clock and master (on pentode 50w) at about 10 o'clock. Tones as follows -

Gear 1, OD 1 - Early Van Halen/Michael Schenker tone. This is VHII straight up. But by lightening the attack, any 70's rock tone is possible. Rolling off the volume produced a great clean tone too - not Fender shimmery clean, but great all the same.

Gear 1, OD 2 - 80's heaven, just like all those classic modded tones that we all hankered over . Think Lynch, DeMartini, Jake E Lee or even Slash. I'd think I'll be using this for rythym work most of the time.

Gear 2, OD 1 - Starts where Gear 1 left off, but adds a great dollop of low end chunk. Also smoother and possibly more AOR such as Winger, Schon etc.

Gear 2, OD 2 - Into serious gain here along the lines of 1987 era John Sykes and also very much like Doug Aldrich's Cameron modded Marshall JMP's.

Gear 3 just adds more gain taking off from Gear 2 and on OD 2, soloing takes on a very liquidy, compressed feel that just seems to sustain for as long as you want.

The amp as a whole has a tight feel and although there is more than enough gain for most peoples need's, it remains clear and articulate. You can't hide behind any mud or fizziness so technique becomes impotant, although the rewards are very satisfying. I can't wait to run this baby through my 4x12's!!!!! All I can say is believe the hype!!!

As for the solo function, it's superb - you can get a big jump in volume, more than enough for solo's. I thought my Engl was a great amp (and it still is), but this is just on another plane!!!

Re: Splawn Competition in da house.........with pics!

I thought he was keeping it. Well, his loss is your gain - and lots of gain at that.

LOL!!! My youngest two are 7 and 8 and there really good with stuff like this - much older for they're years (although they did crayon all over the screen of a 42" rear projection tv when they were younger!!!!)

LOL!! yeah! He's really pleased with his Cornford Matt, he said that even though he loved teh Splawn, it was simply too much for his needs. As you said, my gain.

Rocker, I've always been interested in an Engl. What do you have and how does it compare tonewise to Splawn? I know they are completely different flavors, but are they complimentary meaning that they cover different spectrums and meet in the middle somewhere?

Matt, I got an Engl Screamer 50 combo with a matching 1X12 cab. The circuit is based on the Ritchie Blackmore model 100w head. These have less gain and are less aggresive than say the Powerball and Fireball etc and are voiced to give a more 'classic' tone. It is 'Marshall - esque' without really having the classic Marshall roar - it runs 5881 power tubes. The clean channel is very good - not Fender clean but not far off.

It's a very versatile amp, while I suppose the Splawn can be described as a one trick pony (but what a pony eh???). It has two channels but each channel has switchable gain which in effect gives four channels. Add to this a VLS (adjustable solo boost) on every channel and a nice switchable and adjustable real spring reverb and it all adds up to a nice package at a really good price too.

I suppose in a nutshell, you could say it was a Fender/Marshall hybrid without sounding exactly like either. It sounds like a compromise, but the reality it does have it's own sound and is a very, very good amp. I would say that I could cover just about everything the Splawn covers with the Engl, just not as well although the Engl has an excellent clean channel and 'less Marshall'
crunch, so I'd say that all my tone needs are covered.

I've heard good things about the Blackmore model, so it sounds like you have all your bases covered there.

Re: Splawn Competition in da house.........with pics!

Well short of stealing all of Gearjonesers rig, then yeah!!! LOL!!!!

BTW Matt, what would you recomend for speakers to compliment the Splawn? I'm gonna be using a Marshall 1960b with 75's to begin with but I know Scott recommends X pattern with 75's and G12H's. Also thinking of getting an OS 2x12 for smaller gis, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Rocker, I'm probably not the best person to ask on this as I'm transitioning right now and I play mostly at home. Currently I'm using an Avatar 4x12 w/ Hellatone H30/H60 X-pattern. To me it sounds just fine. However, I'm downsizing to a Splawn 2x12 (checks in the mail), and Scott talked me into his new Big Block speakers. I'm stoked. Scott has always recommended his Eminence Manowar/Governor X-pattern so you can't go wrong there. I have heard great review with Greenbacks as well. V30s seem hit-and-miss depending on the reviewer. The answer is there is no good answer and it really seems to be in the ear of the beholder. The only sure bet is probably Scott's recommended package since he's got the golden ear :)

Oh, and I have heard good things about the 75/G12H X-pattern - probably the Celestion near-equivalent to the Governor/Manowar, but probably brighter.

Wish I could help more - I'm a rookie.

Hey Rocker, that seems like a great deal especially as it's a bit of a rarity over here. What's the wiring set up on these... I mean are they point to point, pcb, tag board... etc? Just wondered as they look like total quality, I'd love to hear it. It would take a serious amp for me to even think about leaving the Cornfords at home, Gearjonser is a bad, BAD..... B A D man 'coz I really want me a Bognor!

Anyway, great amp dude... Cool.

Re: Splawn Competition in da house.........with pics!

I love the white color. Sounds like a smokin' amp. You guys keep fueling this Splawn GAS of mine... lol

Well my fellow band mate has a MK50h which is a great amp, but the Splawn just smokes it!!!!! Both are built to similer standards, so you could say that the Splawn is up there with a Cornford in terns of build quality, but the Splawn has the 70's/80's EL34 mojo going on as well as extra features such as footswitchable gears etc and that just finishes the deal for me.....
