splawn supersport

Any comments? I know it does brown sound, how about a notch below that..typical Plexi type tones?

Re: splawn supersport

I play in a couple of cover bands that cover a variety - G&R, AC/DC, Ozzy, Katy Perry, Pink, SRV, Dwight Yoakam, Bruno Mars, Blondie, CCR, Bob Seger etc etc etc.

I've been using Budda SuperDrive combos the last couple of years but thought it would be fun to try out something different.
I got a used Splawn SuperSport combo a few month ago and like it a lot.
Of course the gain channel sounds great but the clean channel sounds really good also. Stays clean at higher volumes with lots of headroom.

I keep it in first gear/OD1 with the gain set around noon.
That's barely tapping into the amount of gain this amp can produce.
That gives me all of my classic rock tones.
Cleans up really well with just the guitar's volume knob.

My Pro Mod is the same way. Put it in 1st gear and it'll do classic/old school tones all day long.

Re: splawn supersport

Thanks for the info folks. Unfortunately a big setback at my work killed my new amp plans for several months.

Re: splawn supersport

Yeah. Its in the running along with a couple hiwatt types (reeves, hi tone). I am hoping by early next year to be back on track with gear funds.

I do have a orange micro terror due to arrive this evening for a change of pace from the H&K.

Re: splawn supersport

I just learned that they now do a Nitro Super Sport.

Hot damn.

GAS.

Now it's between that and an Engl Ironball for my next amp.

I am not familiar with all the Splawn stuff, is the Nitro one of the superhighgainers?

I played a "SomethingRod" years ago when the hype was new about them, and it was very impressive, but too tight/focused for my tastes in Marshall tone. Great if you were doing LA/MTV metal, but not where I needed it to be.

That came about because one of their customers had a Nitro, but wanted one with a SS poweramp. Great idea, IMHO.

They're geared more towards Metal, gobs of gain.

And I'm guessing you played a Quick Rod? Did it have the "Gear" knob?

It was several years ago, and since my second child was born, my memory is toast ;) But I think it had the gear knob.

And thanks for the info :)

Re: splawn supersport

I owned the Quick Rod. Jeff, in Gear 1 w a boost you can get great JMP style tones.
I wish I could have kept the QR and also afford the East, but the decision was made and I am glad I made it.

Re: splawn supersport

Yeah the quick rod is more in the classic marshall vein. The nitro has a bigger low end, more emphasis on growly low mids and has more gain on tapthan the quick rod. Sorta a marshall sound that is capable of going toe-to-toe with a mesa recto, a 6505 or some other beastly metal amp.
