The splawn has a somewhat smoother sound and more low end. There are tons of Splawn clips online for a more accurate comparison.

Yeah i've heared the clips but they are all pretty high gain, i'm interested in the tonal difference on the same gain level.

I sold my JCM800 when I got the Quick Rod.
The Splawn has more resolution and better harmonics. The actual tone controls on the Splawn are more subtle than the JCM800, but it also needs less tweaking to get it to sound 'right'.
If you're after the ultimate old school metal or modded Marshall tone from the 80s, the Splawn is the best!
