Never done a swirl paint job. if the paint is not level, it's that much more clear you have to build up. If you have globs of swirl all over the place, you're going to buy a lot of cans and load up with so much clear to not risk sanding through your colors when you are level sanding. I would estimate at least six cans.. and you probably would have a longer cure time than what the manufacture specifies.
If you're not concerned with a level finish, and don't mind a little texture, I would use just one can. I do a wet coat every 4 minutes. try not to load up in areas or you risk putting runs in your coats. But if the swirls have a texture to the guitar, then maybe it won't be noticeable.
I would have some halogen lamps to dry under. they put out pretty good heat, helps the coats lay more level and cure faster.
