I was just wondering how many cans or coats do I need to put on an ash guitar that has a swirl paint job on it? I ordered 2 cans of it and I have seen articles of 1 can or 2 cans to use. What steps should I use? I read the first coat is light and then the 2nd coat goes on better. I don’t want to screw it up. Do I need to sand after every coat?

Never done a swirl paint job. if the paint is not level, it's that much more clear you have to build up. If you have globs of swirl all over the place, you're going to buy a lot of cans and load up with so much clear to not risk sanding through your colors when you are level sanding. I would estimate at least six cans.. and you probably would have a longer cure time than what the manufacture specifies.
If you're not concerned with a level finish, and don't mind a little texture, I would use just one can. I do a wet coat every 4 minutes. try not to load up in areas or you risk putting runs in your coats. But if the swirls have a texture to the guitar, then maybe it won't be noticeable.
I would have some halogen lamps to dry under. they put out pretty good heat, helps the coats lay more level and cure faster.

I have a metal locker I use to hang up the body/neck with a small halogen lamp inside. It probably gets 90 inside that small space. I think you should be safe. if in doubt, do it in the shade.
But IIRC, the manufacture recommends and ambient temperature of 65 and up. the risk factor of having your aerosol too cool is it interferes with atomization (or spray pattern) of the product as it exits the vessel. The finer the spray, the less texture to contend with. It's a common practice to have a hot plate of warm water for the can to sit inside for that reason.
I have no idea what the flashpoint of this stuff is, I think if you avoid application in direct sunlight at those temperatures, you shouldn't risk any spontaneous combustion.
Also, wear a vapor mask and cover your skin as much as you can. This stuff has some nasty chemicals you shouldn't be breathing in. You should be able to pick up a 3m vapor mask at most hardware stores.

Thank you, light coats is what I was thinking exactly. I dont want dripping off any other problem with to heavy a coat. The dry time between coats from what I have read is pretty quick. Slow and steady is going to be my goal. It is my first clear coat I am doing. Hopefully there won’t be to many errors.
