I got my first floating-trem-equipped guitar a week ago.(floyd original)
and tuning is perfect...until I try to silence spring rattle...
I have tried every method I could think of: wrapping the springs in heatshrink, stuffing them with foam...
NOTHING seems to work, tuning becomes completely unstable.
please help :help:

Re: spring silencing methods make tuning unstable

I have see many people say thu use surgical tubing. Personally I haven't ever had an issue with my ibanez edge III trem like that so I'm only quoting what I've seen others post. Hope you get your issue fixed.

Re: spring silencing methods make tuning unstable

Buy some of those rubber coated springs.

How many springs do you have on the guitar?

Re: spring silencing methods make tuning unstable

Get strips of felt to put in the center of the springs./

Re: spring silencing methods make tuning unstable

I use memory foam stuffed under the springs in one large piece.... I've never noticed any tuning issues whatsoever.

Give it a couple really really hard yanks up and down and spit some whiskey on it..... should be about perfect after that.

tuning issues
spring noise
new Floyd

your tuning problems are on the knife edges of the Floyd
a bit of Chapstick or Vaseoline as a lubricant should cure the problem

the knife edge is binding just a bit causing the tuning not to return

just a touch of lube on either the edge or the post should do
not much

Re: spring silencing methods make tuning unstable

God knows how many Floyds I've had, and I've never silenced the springs. I must be missing something lol....

Re: spring silencing methods make tuning unstable

Yeah spring noise.

Haha. I walked right into that one.

Is the spring noise picked up by the pickups, or is it just something you can hear come from the guitar?

The only noise I've ever had from Floyd's is when they're blocked off. I often find the Floyd will 'knock' the blocking wood. All about control then.

I bought some rubber coated springs (for my edge zero II) from some guy from Poland, via ebay. They are great.
Also I use (in my rest of floyds/strats) medical rubber tubing inside the springs, it lets the springs move, while eliminating the noise and rattle.

Re: spring silencing methods make tuning unstable

Wrap electrical tape right at the base of the spring. Right before it breaks off for the loop. One good wrap per spring.
