I've got a Springsteen weekend this week and have listen to alot of his stuff, watched videos, read threads about his music, gear etc. etc.
He's always been a HUGE influence on my playing, especially acoustically. But I have studied his electric playing style, tone etc. a little more now and from watching videos, he mostly plays extremely close to the saddles, holding is palm almost behind the bridge on his teles. I normally play in the middle of the two pickups with my hand over the bridge when playing teles, feels most natural and comfortable that way.
But that distinctive Springsteen tone need to be strummed just over the bridge area. Even though he uses Barden pickups in his new Teles and built in preamps and advanced wirings and stuff done by Petillo. I think you can get the tone and vibe going quite easily with any vintage style Tele and a decent amp/pedal setup by playing close to the saddles.
Not any revolutionary notice or anything, I just never thought of that before
Oh, and gotta love the Born To Run album! Now I'm gonna listen more
