Squeaky straplocks remedies?

Adieu

New member
Normally I just use Grolsch locks instead, but on a couple guitars, they came to me with the Schaller buttons... and what's otherwise a nice setup is kinda driving me nuts with the squeaking

Any fixes short of chucking em and installing something else?

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

Have you tried a drop of light household oil, like 3-in-1?

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

I hate the Schaller strap locks. The nut always comes lose and they squeak.

I use the Dunlop strap locks.

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

Try some of the Big Bend's Nut Sauce. Only takes a tiny bit, worked for me.

Now, if you have a guitar with microphonic pickup(s), nothing will work until you fix the pickup.

Tighten the nut then use a touch of nail polish. Thirty years and never a fail.

Use a bar of soap on the outer lip of the strap button itself.

Look into the new Schaller S-Locks if you haven't already, they rectify both of those issues.

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

S-Locks solve these problems. They don't squeak, they are much easier to install, and they improve on every strap lock design (except recessed ones) by 100%.

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

+1 on the S-locks. I’ve bought two sets now and they are a vast improvement on the original design.

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

I always used blue loctite on the threads to keep them secure and a carry a deep well socket for tightening it down. I haven't had a problem since I started doing that a decade ago.

That’s the other reason I use Dunlop’s. I’ve been recessing them on some instruments since the 80s (before they were sold by Dunlop)

I’ve got a set of Dunlop’s that I bought a few months ago...still haven’t installed them yet.
I don’t know what I’m waiting for...?

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

The squeaking helps accentuate the 2nd-order harmonics.

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

Good god people - don't you have any sense or WD-40?

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

wd-40 the heck out of them, then take sone electrical tape and cut some strips to wrap the strap pins themselves and also put a couple strips inside the locks, also unscrew the locks and put just a small dab of super glue on the threads and then screw them in tight, you will be ready to do some guitar spins fearless

Re: Squeaky straplocks remedies?

I've been using the Schaller locks for going on 10 years. I've never run into any of the issues y'all are talking about. The locks just need to bw tightened periodically and you're good to go.
