Squeal with covered pup.

I fitted a cover to a 59b. I installed it in my Epi Les Paul and it was fine, no squeal at all, sounded fine.

I took it out as it never fitted the guitar, tone wise, and I've just put it in my new Epi SG but there's bad squeal off it now unless I turn the gain down.

I understand it's most likely I just didn't fit the cover properly, but what confuses me is how come it worked fine in the Les Paul, and doesn't now?

Re: Squeal with covered pup.

moving it round may have caused the cover to contact the pole pieces

squeal is caused by someting vibrating , no?

Re: Squeal with covered pup.

Just putting tape over the polepieces eliminates any contact that might happen there, and yeah it was prbly moving it that did it. no major problem just have to unsolder the cover to tape the poles and then solder it back up.

Re: Squeal with covered pup.

Tried taking the cover off. I'd already taped over the poles, but redid it anyway, and made sure the cover was on really tight before soldering it back on. Also put some bubble wrap under the pickup.

Still the same problem.

Re: Squeal with covered pup.

I did search for some answers before posting this thread and Gearjoneser's advice on wax potting is good. I'm just worried it wouldn't make any difference. It DOES help a little if I press down on the pup when the squeal starts.

Would I be as well selling the black 59 and just getting something already nickel covered? Thing is, I never liked this 59 in the Les Paul, but it sounds great in the SG.

Re: Squeal with covered pup.

How is the HB mounted in the SG? Is this any different to how it was mounted in the LP? (Different screws, different springs, rubber tubing instead of springs, whatever?)

Remote possibility. The PU cavities in a LP are usually deeper than in an SG. It is possible that the height adjustment screws are making physical contact with the bottom of the PU cavity in the SG. This, in turn, could set up resonances through the baseplate and cover of the HB. These resonances could be generating the squeal.

this.

and my question to you is: why do you think wax potting would never work? every pickup that has been wax potted and tested in my presence has benefited.

Simply because I've had wax potted Epiphone pickups in the past that are microphonic to the point of being unusable in a band situation.

It's mounted the same. I don't think the screws are touching the bottom of the cavity.
