Squier 40th Anniversary Tele upgrade idea, with questions and opinions..

i dont care for traditional tele neck pups. they sound narrow, muted, weak, and sometimes dull to my ears.

This is how I feel about most singles in general. I do enjoy the when I play alone at the house. Not in a stage setting as they just don't match up with the sound.

you could match it with a lil 59 or red devil if you wanted more of a humbucker tone in the bridge.

After all the research I've been doing, I'm thinking these may be the starting point.
You have any experience with either? Not finding much about the red devil especially.

It just has it's own character. I find Tele neck pups to be weak and uninspiring. The mini has girth, without being overpowering or muddy as a full-sized humbucker might be.

I really think this may be the one.. now just to figure what to pair it with.
And find a pickguard to fit it.

i have a strat set of red devils, but havent tried the tele set yet. the strat set is very much a humbucker tone in series, i dig em

Me :lmao:

I think for a certain kind of rhythm sound the tele neck is awesome. I'd say I do prefer it versus a strat neck pickup which has a more 'common' quack, too common to my ears.
A the moment , for example, I use tele for my band where we are playing some alternative semi distorted rock, where it's usual to choose Jazzmaster if you have an idea over the genre, well, the tele neck sound is really spot on for the purpose.
(i was actually thinking about customizing a strat pickguard to accomodate a HB brisdge and a tele neck.... I think it's considered illegal)

i mean... it doesnt sound like an antiquity II tele bridge pup clean. it sounds like a fat humbucker clean, but i use the strat set clean a lot. its not sparkly and bright, but you said you dont like single coils so this should work fine for you

Cool... What size pots do you use? I know they're "drop in" replacements, so I'm assuming they're designed for 250k.
But wondering if I should use, 500k because of the mini... or maybe 300-375 like the 52 Hot rods.

I think I'm leaning towards the SM-3n and the Red Devil bridge...
Now just to talk myself into pulling the trigger before I change my mind or get another recommendation.

I should just route this thing out and put a JB/Jazz in it. Takes the anxiety away lol

500k will be a bit brighter than 250k. i run 250k in my tele and in the strat with red devils, but i also run bright vintage amps. it easier to take treble away than to add it.

Anybody happen to know where to come up with 375k pots like the AV 52 hotrods used?
Thinking it may be a good middle ground, and seeing as this will kinda be the same thing.

The only thing I'm finding is PRS 375k pots, but they're a tad on the high side... and split shaft.

Given that you also got 2 humbucker guitars, I'd stick true single coils in this. Either a Hot Tele or Quarter Pound in the bridge and a a Vintage Tele or Quarter pound in the neck. Just my $0.02

I've got a Hwy1 that I'm may leave alone.. and 2 strats with singles.. I like singles when I'm playing around at the house. Not so much in the band mix.
This is more or less a "let's see if I dig this" and go from there.
But thanks for the input. If I do upgrade the Hwy1, I already have some ideas now.
