Squier Affinity Tele Special

Is this a decent "fixer-uper" I.E. change the parts/pickups/maybe neck?

Does anyone have one? I don't know if I'm digging the color. If it was more 52RI colored it'd be mine in a heartbeat. Oh how I love that guitar. You'd think they would make MIM tele's in that color?

thanks,

a cheapskate

Yeah those are cool, if you get one with a good neck. This is Squier's Achille's heel to me. I don't care about the body/electronics/hardware, but I need a good neck. Squier's are so spotty in this - I don't think any other company is so scattered. Some of fine, others are absolute crap. Most are crap I think, but I have played a few nice ones.

But the body is just perfect for fixing up, it's hard to go wrong for $160.

if you are replacing everything, just buy something nicer. i did this to my first electric and wasted a lot of money. i learned a lot though....

exactly what i was thinking!!! if you are going to mod it to death get a better axe in the first place.... or buy the aftermarket parts you want and buy a quality neck and body from Warmoth and have a really nice axe....

I want one of these Squiers myself.... but just to toy with... no heavy mods or anything.. just a toy.... It would work fine with my modeling gear...

Re: Squier Affinity Tele Special

I have one, bought it to be a testbed for my Tele pu's. The one I have is actually a pretty decent sounding piece of wood, better than many American or American Deluxe Teles I've tried, even with the since-departed cheesy ceramics.

It's good enough that I would take it out and gig with it if I ever get around to having the frets dressed.

I also don't think there's anything wrong with putting quality pu's and electronics in a cheap guitar, IF...you know it's a good piece of wood.

Re: Squier Affinity Tele Special

I've eyed those myself. The neck is the big thing for me since my last Tele had a neck profile that hurt my hand. I'm leaning more towards a parts-o-Tele or Esquire though.

Re: Squier Affinity Tele Special

i used to have one of those, i remember it wasnt too bad (playability) i owned it for a very short time.

I think I may end up doing that too, unless I can find a 52RI for $600

I've heard these things aren't string through, they're top-loaders. No thanks, I want as close to a nice old tele as I can.

ya if i had a "good" one i could see gigging with one.... changing the pickups is cool to mod a cheap guitar... i'd save the original PU's so you can unload the cheap-o axe stock in the future if need be... I just could not see buying a Squier Affinity just for the neck and body and mod the hell out of it to the point that there was no point in buying a cheapie guitar in the first place.... If i was buying $400 worth of aftermarket parts it would be for a much better guitar than that $169 Squier...

Still i want one....

If you want to get as close to a nice "old" Tele as you can, then a top-loader will get you there. In the early years of the Tele and Esquire, they were top-loaders. A Les Paul is a top-loader too if you think about it so I see nothing wrong with a top-loader bridge on a Tele.

If there's a good neck and body, you wouldn't need $400 worth of parts. I can't imagine a new bridge and pickups being that much money.

well here in Canada it could, $400 is a high figure for sure but you could spend that much...... I'm always thinking in Canadian coin... But it would depend on what parts and where you bought it.... Quality tuners, modern or 3 barrel bridge-(Gotoh's modern is the one i like), new pots and switches, and the Pickups... it can really start adding up... and if you have a tech install the stuff it would be another large chunk of cash... Not everyone on this site installs their own stuff..

I just can't see going to that much trouble with that low end model of guitar.... I could see picking one up and chnaging the bridge pickup and use it like an Esquire.... Just an axe to toy with... besides the necks feel pretty good on those and i like the large frets.... But i know myself... i'll end up with a MIM Tele over the Squier i bet

Re: Squier Affinity Tele Special

Am I the only one thats notice that the angle of the bridge pickup is wrong on the affinity Squiers?

For comparison...

For a Closer Comparison...(MIM tele on Top, Squire Affinity on the bottom)

The bridge pickup is not at the right angle. Not tilted enough. The angle is closer to that of a Strat bridge pickup than it is to the Tele bridge pickup angle. Thats always bothered me about those affinity squiers.
