Squier Bronco Bass - Opinions?

What are your opinions on this?

I would like to build my own but at the price these are going for it makes me wonder if I wouldn't be better off just getting one of these.

Anyone tried one or heard one live?

Only concern for me just by looking at it: 19 frets? I'm not a bass player but is that enough? I've never seen a bass with less than 21 (and with all that space I don't know why they don't make them with 24... that's just my pet peeve tough of cramming all you can where you can).

The Squier Bronco is intended as an economy/beginner's instrument. Inevitably, corners have been cut to minimise production costs and its retail price.

Frets, schmets! Some of my favourite bass guitars have no frets at all! Seriously though, on a short scale "student" instrument, 19 frets will be plenty.

I do not know what sort of prices that you are considering? Personally, I would recommend any bassist on a tight budget to seek out a pre-owned Yamaha RBX or Attitude Plus.

As and when funds allow, you can upgrade the pickup(s). In the case of the Attitude Plus, I also fitted a heavier bridge. This may have improved sustain. I only did it to improve the on-strap balance.

Re: Squier Bronco Bass - Opinions?

Well, I am on a budget and I am a beginner so I reckon it suits me, eheh.

A fretless may sound nice but it provides the scale for such playing, this one is spaced for 19 frets/steps and I reckon it is as far as it will go (do bassists bend the string to get to a note their fretboard can't handle?) unless I screw an extension of some sort or replace the neck (not worth the $). I'm just asking if 19 frets are enough for a bassist usually.

PS: This one is for a low price and new. I won't say how much or who is selling out of fear some unscrupulous members will try to snag it.

I have one. The two barrel bridge needs to be replaced and the pickup could stand being replaced. I replaced the bridge on mine with a cheap 4 barrel bridge and I cut the pickguard to take a Lawrence 500XL I had lying around. It plays great and sounds good. It really is the perfect beginners bass, bass for guitar players or bass for people with small hands. The neck has a P-bass style profile.

My friend here in town has a Bronco, and it's way too easy for me to hit the strings too hard and make em flop.

I think you'd be better off with a p-bass or jazz bass copy. Or a Peavy T-40, which still go for cheap...but that one has a 35 inch scale...it's a knuckle cracker for the first couple of weeks.

I figured about the bridge. I'm willing to give the pup a shot.

Did you have to route it or was there enough space in the body to take the bucker? I'm thinking if I don't like the pup I'd route it and slap a pbass pup in there.

I don't really want to get a full scale.
Put mandocello strings on and drop a Cool Rails in. Voila!
Eheh, so, I'm buying a short scale bass to make a long scale mandocello. That is insane enough to appeal to me!

Re: Squier Bronco Bass - Opinions?

There's plenty of room inside to fit a P-bass or humbucker pickup. A rail pickup like the Cruiser, Lace or Cool Rails would be a good direct replacement.

Cool, thanks.

I reckon I'd go with a P-bass pup, why put a guitar pup when I have the space for a bass one? I would have to buy a pup either say so it's always a cost, might as well, get the right thing.

I could slap a pj set I have here but they are Alvarez's made by EMG and are actives, that would mean routing too much just for the new controls and the like.
