Squier Cabronita - Proper P90s or not?

Jazzmaster pickups aren't P90s.

Not much difference tonally though IMO. Both overwound single coils, respond similarly to controls and attack, etc etc. Yeah the construction (and history) is different but you can dial in similar sounds with similar settings. But I get the pursuit.

Bah. They kinda screwed that one up, didn't they? I dig the original with filtertrons and even the one loaded with P-90's, but they should have called this one something else.

I may still get one, but call it a Surfcaster or a Jazzocaster.

I wholeheartedly disagree with you on this one.

Traditional P90's sound nothing like traditional JM pickups to me.

Semantics. I didn't say they sound the same. I said they can be dialed in to have similar sounds. And I believe they both have more winds than regular 'ol Tele pickups - P90 does for sure, not certain on the JM pups.

I never said that you claimed they sounded the same.

I said that they're completely different. Aside from 60 cycle buzz, they don't share a lot of similarities, to my ears and through my rig.

If you said you can get close to a P90 with a beefy tele lead, I'd go along. JM to P90? Nah.

Oh dear, what did I start?

Nothing, lol. I'm not a guy to argue with digital acquaintances, my posts are almost always intended to share a piece of insight - insight that may or may not apply to anyone else. The intention behind my post was to say that in my experience, of course they don't sound the same with identical settings but with different EQ settings and a variety of different gain staging methods P90s and JMs can be tweaked to sound and feel incredibly similar. I've used 'em both quite a bit in my current rig, and that was one takeaway so I was trying to be helpful by sharing that because it honestly surprised me. But there's a lot of mystique around gear so I totally understand the desire to try "the real thing". Sometimes there's nothing like using the real thing because then you have that baseline of experience to compare to. That was it :)

With different EQ settings and a variety of different gain staging methods, you can make any pickup sound similar to any other pickup.

Got to agree. I have a TV Jones Classic Plus bridge in the neck of my Tele it screams.
