Squier modding! Fun and easy mods you like to do.

Re: Squier modding! Fun and easy mods you like to do.

Although there isn't much left of the original but the body and bridge, I think the best single mod was to change the pickups. Of course, all mods sure added up to a really fine instrument.

Changed bridge to stainless steel w/bent saddles & high mass full size block
Oak Grigsby selector switch

My Squier CV 60s was pretty incredible when I got it. All I did was replace the saddles with String Savers, wire the bridge pickup to a tone control, and install an Area 61 in the bridge slot. The pickups that it came with sounded exactly like old Strat pickups to me, but I prefer a little more push, and noiseless in the bridge. I've considered getting a new block for the bridge, but it sounds fine as is.

My 13 y/o daughter commandeered it anyway, and joined a band, so no mods for her! Actually, I'm probably gonna get her a Squier for her birthday, and then I'll probably have to mod that!

Re: Squier modding! Fun and easy mods you like to do.

Still got my Daughter's Venus (Black) and really like it for an inexpensive unusual guitar, plus, it's got a GREAT feeling and playing neck and pickups were upgraded to a Seymour Duncan Antiquity Strat Neck/'59 Trembucker Set in it, CTS 500k Volume/added Fender TBX Tone and set up with .10-.46 Strings. I'm in the "love it" category. Great Bang for the Buck acquisition.

At one point in approx. 2000 I picked up a Sunburst Venus, Black Venus and 2 Fiesta Red Jag-Stangs. The Black Venus was the only one I kept and have recently pulled out of the case as my Daughter is now off at college and I always enjoyed playing the damn thing so much.

Modding Squiers is fun! Actually after all the messing about I've done making "Parts-Casters" I think just finding a Squier I like the color of, and putting a brass block tremolo in it is all they really need.

Re: Squier modding! Fun and easy mods you like to do.

I bought a 2013 Squier Standard Strat brand new out of boredom one day at my local music store.
(Antique Burst, red tortoise guard, white pup covers/knobs, Large 70's h/s, rosewood board 2pt trem like a USA strat)

Took it home and plugged it in to mess around with it, and I must say I was very impressed with the feel and build quality of it, and that's when I decided to hang onto it for a while and beat it around....
...First thing I did was gut it and replace the pickups with a DiMarzio Chopper (8.30k) in the bridge and Seymour APS-1's (6.00k/6.10k) in the mid/neck from my '87 Pacer Deluxe. That's when the tone matched the feel of the guitar...I also replaced the red tortoise guard with a parchment american strat guard, and added black pup covers/knobs to replace the white ones... Schaller strap locks...I'm using 2 trem springs, 8-38's in Eb with the action as low as I can get it..

Last night I ordered a parchment H/S guard from Warmoth, which I'm going to load with a Bill-n-Becky L500R (7.70k) in the bridge w/ a mini toggle to go from series/split/parallel, and prob keep the APS-1 (6.10k) in the neck for now with a 3-way selector switch and one 500k volume
My other pup ideas are a shielded L500XL (15.03k) bridge/Chopper (8.30k) neck, if the L500R/APS-1 doesn't suit my fancy...

Next I'm going to trim the Large 70's headstock down to the smaller h/s, add a brass nut, and scallop the fretboard. I'm also going to sand the neck to slim the contour down atleast 2mm down the length of the neck, then finish it out with 2000 grit and oil...

I have to say that despite all of the mods I did to this guitar, I feel that the quality of Squiers rival that of the Mexican strat series that Ive played recently... Definitely a good bang for the buck in my opinion....I don't think I would've been much better off by starting out with a Standard Strat as my starting point to be honest. I would have only spent more $$ for the initial purchase price that's about it really...well that and it would've said Fender instead of Squier by Fender...

^^^ that's because its just wood, not rocket science, if chinese can build the fastest trains, largest bridges and manufacturing plants on earth, I cannot see why they couldn't put two freaking pieces of wood together.
