i have a squier strat and io wnat to get new pickups. on the squier website on the specifications it said the body wood was agathis. if anyone has had any expirience with agathis, what pickups might be good for it. i want the vintage strat sound, but im not sure if i can get it with my guitar. any help would be appreciated.

Re: squier strat

Drop some APS-1's in it. That way you are not putting real expensive pups in a cheap guitar. They are very good pups for the price. Also consider the SSL-1 for the middle and neck if you want a real glassy tone in those positions. The SSL-1 is in the same price range as the APS-1 but a few bucks cheaper.

Re: squier strat

i was looking at some different places that sold these and i cant specify what position i want. does that mean the pickups are the same in all positions?

Re: squier strat

You can order the alnico 5 SSL-1 or 2 and alnico 2 APS-1 or 2 in calibrated sets with each pickup wound for it's position on the guitar...but you'd have to wait a while.

I usually recommend either of those pickups for neck and middle pickups and then something stronger for the bridge pickup - like a JB JR. or Twangbanger or something like that.

My 80's Japanese Squire is made of alder and I used a SSL-1/SSL-1/JB JR. set for years in that guitar. But these days I have a set of Antiquity Surfers in that ax and that's the best it's ever sounded. Second best was the set of Antiquity Texas Hots I had in it previously.

You could do a SSL-1/SSL-1/JB JR. set for about $175. and a set of Antiquitys for about $235.

Another cool set would be the APS-2/APS-2/Twangbanger set...I use that one in another Strat and that set would run you about $175 or so too.

The APS-1 or 2 seem a little hotter than the SSL-1 or 2...but still very vintage in tone.

The SSL-1 and APS-1 have staggered poles and the SSL-2 and APS-2 have flat poles by the way. There's not a huge diff but I think the staggered poles might be a little brighter.

Re: squier strat

uf i wanted to get SSL-3 for the bridge, and SSL-1's for the neck and middle, how could i get the middle pickup RW/RP?

Re: squier strat

I stock the SSL-1 RW/RP. It's a few bucks more than the standard model. Lew

Re: squier strat

is there a hotter alnico 2 pickup? cause i might wanna get that for a bridge but on the tone chart it shows it as pretty weak

Re: squier strat

If you mean hotter than the APS-1's then you could put a Twangbanger in the bridge and it would be a little hotter than the APS-1's in the mid and neck. The Twangbanger is Alnico II and many players put it in the bridge to matchup with APS-1's.

The Antiquity TX Hots which are Alnico II can be ordered as a set with a hotter bridge (the Antiquity TX Hot Custom Bridge).

Re: squier strat

Um... its a squier... changing the pickups wont do ANYTHING for your sound... i promise... buy a mexican strat and youll get 100x better sound then you will changing anything on the squire.

wrong-o. my bro's squier is amazing, and if he would drop some $'s on some duncans for it, it would be a player's main guitar. this specific squier is better than any fender that i have played, even the custom shop ones.
