Squier VM HSS Strat - Triple Shot?

Hi, I've got my eye on a Vintage Modified HSS Strat and was wondering what my options were for the bridge humbucker. If I get a triple shot, would I need to mount it on the pickguard, and has anyone done this? I'm wondering if the pickup would be too close to the strings. I appreciate any input!
